So, Frontier are doing quite well then?

Elite is one of the most pure, old-school modern games you will ever see.. especially online. They could be making 10x more money if they put micro-transactions and pay to win in the game.. there are people out there who would gladly pay 100 pounds per unlocked engineer or materials. I applaud them for that.. They obviously know that but do not want to betray the existing community for the sake of making more money.
TBH I have to agree with this one.

For all their flaws, and FD has a lot of flaws, they do run a rather customer-friendly post-sale business model.

Curious, a company some of our forumites insist are 'incompetent' appears to be very successful... How odd 🤷‍♂️

We have comments like this:

Which is obviously debunked by fact...

Well done, Frontier!
(so will you get my pre-purchased Odyssey alpha online quickly please?)

To be fair, we're only seeing one aspect of FDev's business and I'd have to say FDev do sometimes display a lack of competence when managing ED.

I dunno if a detailed breakdown of FDev's revenue is available in any financial reports but clearly there's something they are good at, even if it isn't managing ED.

Reminder that funds from other projects do not bleed into each other. In other words, profits from Jurassic World don't get brought over to prop up a game like Elite.

Still they are more focused on money rather than the game itsefl. otherwise they would have put more money in it , many time , they ahve a big group now it's not the samll indy compagny anymore.

Elite is far far far far from pure. Want pure games ? see terraria , stardew , subnautica and many others.

Second, they put micro transaction in the game , it's called arx , and you'r paying for a yellow 6 sec made paint . Yeah. I quite respect the need of money for developing and go further, but elite is generating way more money than it use.
I'm quite for arx tbh , i like these aspect of the game support if you want ect , i'd like to have some "basic custom" then arx strike with sick skins.

Not being the worst do not mean it is good or "pure" . Because modern game (and mobile for the most part) play on psychological manipulation and creating a need for you to pay after , is not really a good example imo.

Third , elite was quite nich at first , and with the base community , micro trans for engineer or pay to progress , would (imo) cause such an uproar that many player may leave.

I'm not saying elite is not good or , that at some point they were not passionnate about it. But lets be real , the way they dev and patch for a game this huge they are not focused on the game but the money generated by it.

So yeah we are far from scam citizen , but we are far from "innocent" either.

Galnet being "paused" because it was to much work and suddenly bring back for odysee release is not a coincidence. Player base were stable before 2020 with slight decrease increase of patchnote (usual). Even more , the blayer base was progressing alot during 2019 during one of the maintenance mode year.

They are not betraying people for money but dont be in some illusion of some "good guys" .

Still i love this game alot but again , it could be so much more.

Different class of games. We're talking 100+ employee dev houses, rather than 1-2 developers in the case of Terraria and Stardew. 10 million units sold of both those games will set up a single or duo developer team for life so it's easy to be virtuous with your updates when there's almost no overheads and you're a millionaire. Need better comparison. Something in Elite's class in term of scope and running costs.

Elite can be be purchased for a fiver, there's no subscription and there's no pay to win, and you can enjoy that fiver for thousands of hours. That's as pure as you're going to get in this division of videogame development.

Ya know, I'm old enough to remember when we didn't expect "lifetime warranties" with video games. We bought the game, played it and either liked it or didn't and chose whether or not to do business with that company again. We didn't whinge and endlessly moan in every public venue we could find in a vain attempt to compel a company to cater to specifically to us.

Seems times have indeed changed.

That said, Frontier have indeed been profitable, and rightfully so. Even with all the competitive attitudes from those who claim that their next upcoming games will shove Elite Dangerous under the proverbial carpet, we've yet to see any other game do so. It's its own unique blend, and doesn't try to be nor have to be every other game out there.
