So, has anyone purchased both a CV1 and a Vive?

My CV1 is shipping so hopefully I'll see it before the end of the month, but I just spotted Pool Nation VR on Steam and now I'm contemplating a Vive purchase. Has anyone here bothered to get both?

I'm holding out on a video card upgrade until there are better waterblocks available for the 1080 (which will work with SLI, apparently current offerings don't) but when I do I will most likely drop one of my 980Ti's in my HTPC so I could potentially have one HMD in the lounge which would allow for room scale experiences.

Thoughts?

Yep. I love them both for different reasons.

I prefer to use the CV1 with ED. I have a 980ti and use HighVR with SMAA. I use the Oculus SDK tool to enable 1.2SS natively in the rift driver. The result is better than ED 1.5SS with 20% less GPU load. (I get 90fps in stations at 80% GPU load).

In my opinion, the CV1 headset is more compact, the image is noticeably clearer and less jaggies, and the headset sits on your head more like a baseball cap and it's easy to get the weight off your face for long sessions. The cable is thinner and mounts on the side which is better when sitting on a high back computer chair. The integrated headphones sound great (although as yet ED doesn't directly support them so you have to set them as the default sound device when playing ED).

So, in my opinion, the Vive is brilliant for room scale, but the CV1 is better suited to seated games. I will be keeping both headsets and using what's best for each activity.

I plug my CV1 into the Vive breakout box so it's easy for me to swap over (I just kill the power to the breakout box before swapping and to reset it). Do this at your own risk tho. Without the breakout box, the oculus driver complains about my USB3 card, so the breakout box serves 2 purposes.

I have the CV1 sensor plugged into a switched USB2.0 hub. The oculus driver complains, but it works fine.

My top top killer apps for each at the moment is ...

Vive: PoolNationVR

Rift : Elite Dangerous, The Climb

Yep.

I got a Vive thinking that would be my primary HMD, and when my Rift arrived, after a couple of unsuccessful sale attempts, I threw in the towel and opened it up to see what kind of a difference it made with E:D.

All I can say is that the difference between the Vive and Rift is night and day wrt E:D. The Rift absolutely kills the Vive, at the moment at least. Resolution is so much better, I can crank up Supersampling to 1.5 on Ultra and 2.0 on VR High, and it's buttery smooth. I can read all the text and it's just fantastic.

I can also say however, that IMHO, the Vive is the better HMD. The ability to maniuplate your environment with you hands is a game-changer, and the room-scale, while a bit cumbersome (but not too bad really), makes head tracking precise. Even while using the Rift, I stood up in the cockpit and when I stood up fully (I'm 6'5"), the tracking was lost, putting me for some reason in the pilot's crotch when tracking returned - a truly unique, if unwanted perspective.

SO, if you're buying for an all-around headset, get the Vive. I'm sure FD and HTC will put their heads together one of these days and fix the Vive - it's just that you have to take it on faith that they'll do it as they are keeping unusually tight-lipped about what, if any support they are working on.

How great though? I mean, I'm fairly skeptical of the included headphones because I just purchased a pair of Shure SE846 which are almost twice the price of the CV1, and I'm looking to get custom sleeves done for comfort. I also have a pair of B&W P7s which are pretty good, but I don't expect to be using them for VR as they are not comfortable with an HMD strap as well.

if you dont like them take them off and use yours! ist dead easy to do!

I've got both and due to the richer content with ED and Chronos, I've been mostly in the Rift lately. Can't wait for more Vive content, specifically more episodes/chapters of Vanishing Realms and The Gallery.
