Horizons So how do you find stuff on planet surfaces?

So tonight I decided to spend a bit of time muckin about on a world with the SRV. Looking for anything really.

After two hours of either aimlessly driving about trying to figure out the scanner thing or flying about seeing if the ships scanners were any better.
I wound up with a grand total of two little resource nodes found. With a complimentary aching feeling of boredom.

Am I missing something? How exactly do you find anything worth exploring?

Wave scanner

Your SRV scanner will indicate things you can find in the direction you're pointed at. The audio will get louder and the signal shorter when you're close. It's bugged atm where far things can erase the signal of close things but if your hearing is good you'll still find stuff.

you need to fly around 2km from the planet surface and look out for the blue circle poi`s, you need to increase the radar range to max to see them from long distance, you can find an array of items/objects on the ground, i.e crashed ships with lootable containers, lost cargo, mining sites with destroyable and lootable drilling rigs, crashed probes and satellites. When you land do as metathrgist said with the wave scannner.

If you are looking for rare materials, using poi wont help. Then you have to resort to driving around with the wave scanner, although you can increase your chances by driving around close to or inside crater rims and natural gully’s, the centre of craters also tend to have a higher number of contacts.

I find that I zoom along in the SRV, get a blip (or several) on the scanner and turn towards it. The blips get stronger and the sound effect gets louder as I approach, then....nothing, the blip is gone, the sound has gone quiet yet I encountered nothing.

In principle the SRV scanner is fairly straight-forward, different patterns for different materials, and an audible cue to tell us when we're close. All good. However, in practise, this doesn't actually work all the time. Ironically, when I was prospecting for stuff a couple of nights ago (still in 2.2.02) the first two rocks I did find and mine were not distinguishable on the scanner at all. No stand-out visual readout and no loud beeping as I approached. I spotted them manually purely by chance.

Possibly I just got unlucky with not finding much, but the scanner was not accurate during this particular session. I did get some nice air (erm, vacuum) in the buggy though, and the games physics do allow for some epic drifting, so I wasn't too unhappy lol.

Scoob.

So pratted about a bit this.

Flew just under 2kmfrom the surface and adjusted the radar and BOOM blue circles. Quickly managed to find some neat stuff.
Was very pleased overall even if the value of the escape pods was negligible.

Iv`e been around Rata Bares (sp?) system and the penal colony the planet is 2.3g but found a lot of hi-grade cargo in the 15 to 30k range.
