So how hard are the wing assassination missions?

I thought I'd do some missions, as I haven't for a while. Got to a port where I am allied, and grabbed two Elite Pirate Assassination missions off the board... And have just now realised that they are wing missions (I haven't visited the mission boards in a long while! :) ).

They are in different systems, so I can complete each one individually... But can I? I've got a battle Cutter close by - is that going to be enough? Or should I try to get some help?

Suggestions welcome while I wait for my Challenger to arrive.

As long as your ship is decently engineered you shouldn't have any problems.
Enemies are a little harder than haz rez ships.

The Cutter is fairly well engineered with 8A prismatics, so I'll give it a go (never had any problems in a haz rez). Have to think about the weapons, though - it's a long time since I flew the Cutter in combat. :D

In a 4 and 5 grade engineered fdl i used to be able to complete them with not much problem.
They are different now though. There are usually 2-3 engineered vultures or other small fast ships and the main target.
My advice would be to concentrate on the escort first, else they will pick you to pieces with rails and engineered beams.
Sometimes you can drop into the mission signal source, take a few shots, jump out and then pick out the main target in sc and interdict them.
Good luck, these arent the lay downs they used to be.

I've mostly been doing wing missions solo. My poor Annie gets a bit battered and needs several repair trips, but for most part I fair OK at the Elite level Missons.
The only downside is that without a wingman, the reward is rather wasted.
With two of you, you both get the same reward. It seems almost a waste to not have a wing doing it.
The fetch x type missions(where you have to buy the goods yourself) are especially more cost efficient in a wing providing everyone in wing takes a fair share of the cargo.

You can interdict them instead of going for the mission USS, that reduces the number of escorts.

Well, my first attempt didn't go well. :D Found the USS, and it was a Corvette and a Vulture (I thought there was a third ship too, but didn't see much of it if there was). I concentrated on the Corvette for a bit, then decided to switch to the Vulture. I think that was a mistake, as it was easier to keep the Corvette in my sights... I did finally get the Vulture, but my shields dropped shortly after and it turns out that reactive armour drops quite quickly (I need to revisit some of the engineering decisions I made). I legged it out of there...

I'll be heading back for more practise in a while... And maybe I should invest in an interdictor...

The first one I did, I killed the three Vulture escorts first, and had the FDL down to 18% hull, when he jumped out. I went to supercruise, found the mission target staightaway- he had 100% shields and 100% hull and three more Vultures! Now I just concentrate on the main target, ignoring the escorts, using SCBs if necessary to keep my shields up on my Corvette. My SLF distracts one of the escorts.

Ha, don't feel bad! They've become increasingly hard. Tried one in my Eagle, just expert level. Target had eight (!) vultures and vipers as escort. Went back to grab another ship. :D

I have no problem with my Cutter with wing assassination missions. It's a little bit more work than the normal ones. I don't have any prismatic. I am using a 8C bi-weave G5 Thermal Fast Charge and a mixture of shield boosters which gives me 3.6 GJ and 60/55/62 in Explosive/Kinetic/Thermal. And I always have an SLF with me, which takes care of the small ships.

Fly/land safe.

These missions are a lot harder than before. There are a lot of ships in the area actively scanning your ship and it’s not long before they all start shooting at you. You need a strong engineered shield and I find it best to ignore all other ships and make a quick kill on the main target. Of course you need G5 weapons to achieve this quickly so he doesn’t just jump away. Done a fair number of these in corvette and FDL using a pair of frags on the FDL to shreds the hull.

The normal pirate killing missions are easy. The wing missions are not. I can normally take out the pirate without losing a single ring of shield, but the one time I accidentally picked a wing mission it went like m0rl0ck describes. I was swarmed with smaller ships ripping me apart while I tried to concentrate on my target. After five attempts I realized I was simply not good enough and abandoned the mission.

Wing assassinations are challenging for most commanders, but you can of course bring your own challenge... There are several ways to clear a wing assassination... ;)

1) In a large ship, killing only target. Difficulty - zero.
2) In a large ship, clearing the instance. Difficulty - easy.
3) In a medium ship, killing only the target. Difficulty - medium.
4) In a medium ship, clearing the instance. Difficulty - hard.

It's that last one you want to aim for. ;)

Some of us have our aiming "skills" from trying to hit a mostly stationary rock the size of a small mountain with the abrasion blaster ;)

Wing Assassinations should be doable in an engineered Imperial Cutter plus fighter. However, the Federal Corvette is my favorite wing assassination ship.

I focus on the mission target first, and depending on time & stacking of multiple wing missions, I takeout the escorts.

You can get the pirate assassination at a med or high sec system and fight them at the beacon with the local police. Their scripted USS wont let the cops join you tho.

Not going to bull**it you. It's pretty difficult. Mainly because 99% of the ships have Phasing Sequence lasers that hurt both your shields and hull at the same time, and there are usually 3 ships to fight: 2 Vultures and a FDL.

I run a full engineered T-10 and BOY it makes me angry how much damage they put off. So be careful. if you're looking for cash, do normal assassinations, it's less hassle, take less time and pay about the same (which I don't understand...)
