So... how is the SRV supposed to board my ship?

I was out exploring in my SRV, recalled the ship and it decided to land on this strange angle. I went near the SRV opening but the board light didn't appear, I was hoping for my SRV to teleport up to the ship. Fortunately, I was able to just dismiss the AspX and recall it again. Thought it made for a funny pic.

It works on foot. It really beams you up.

Did your ship maybe land on one of those invisible rocks?
Auto landing is messy. I saw ships explode upon landing on reddit, mine dropped so low to the ground I couldn't fit underneath, other will land upside down....

Might be a rock, might be auto landing, might be both.

Send it away and recall again having moved a few 100 metres
Yeah, I did that and it worked the second time. It had heck of a time trying to land the first time though before it decided to land on that angle. Didn't help that there's so much rocky terrain I guess.

Well now that we have transporter technology (not really that promised Armstrong moment, is it fdev) I'm surprised we even need to recall our ships.
Just push a button and appear back in your cockpit.

I've 'air jumped' into that situation before by driving around under the ship (particularly at a point under the loading hatch, or in a straight line down from the ship) and waiting to see the point that the light on the dash come on, then mashing the menu to board and I get sucked up like meta alloys into a hungry thargoid.

Now, finding the SRV boarding spot? That would be the tricky bit.

It's half way immersion/"realism", half way gamey. It feels like they couldn't decide between the two.

Or my personal guess, they planned to do ship interiors, and prepared for it, but ran out of time to make it happen. So, when it was rushed toward release, they kept it as it is and invented an excuse for the lack of ship interiors.

Had a similar ship "landing" and if you get in line with the axis of the vehicle bay it does work, the SRV gets reoriented during lift/recovery it's a little disorientating but it works.

Ok, I mustn't have tried hard enough to get into the right position

Sometimes it is just not possible... The hover for instance is at such a steep angle to the terrain that it becomes too hard. But, credit to the computer pilot for giving it a go.

If you change your SRV scanner view to it's highest resolution (i.e. as close up as possible), that can help you to line up. Hot pickups have been in the game for a while. Very useful when you find yourself stuck on top of a mountain in an SRV. :)

Ah, the "hot pickup" feature...
Occurs anytime the Ship can't find a landing spot when recalled.

Technically, the SRV "only" needs to be driven exactly under the Hangar - and you'll see the "Board Ship" Option light up.
The biggest problem is finding that spot, since there's no markers on the ground as there should be.
In large Ships, that often makes a hot pickup virtually impossible.

During Odyssey, I only ever had a hot pickup once and while on foot. It failed, as the Ship was apparently too high above ground (~80m).

If you're well-versed in using your SRV's thrusters, you can bunny-hop up into position to board your ship.
It's a bit of a faff, though.
It's certainly easier to just dismiss your ship, find a better landing site and then recall it again.

About the only time it's useful to have SRV super-skillz is if your ship crash-lands and rolls over so it's just lying there, gradually taking damage.
In that case, sometimes the only way to board it was by inventive SRV piloting.

Course, the other alternative was to simply restart the game in base-game mode so you're magically reunited with your ship in orbit.
Also, wih Odyssey, it might be possible to exit your SRV and board your ship on foot.
Dunno about that though. Never tried it.
