Hardware & Technical So I bought a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick and...

Man I think I hate it.

For some reason it seems so clunky trying to work the throttle on this thing. Feels like a cheap child's toy, and the keyboard/mouse seems to give me way more control in general.

Am I way outside the norm here or have other people had similar experiences?

I sold the X55 for HOTAS-X. It's super simple and very well built. It feels like a toy because it is a toy. Precise and fun to use in anything from GTA through ED to FSX. I love it. To each their own I guess.

Maybe look into the Warthog? I never used it but it looks like one proper piece of a HOTAS. In any case, avoid Saitek / Mad Catz.

I wouldn't quite go that far. I still love all three of my X52 Pro's - but admittedly I've had to do some minor work on them. They are all a few years old now, and maybe quality had dropped recently - which would not surprise me. I don't have a recent one to compare to though :(

Having said that - if they do all turn into paperweights - I'd not hesitate to get a Warthog.

Well, compared to the others it is cheap! About a 10th of the price of a Warthog. :) I really like it though, it has enough features to give me some good control, and I personally like the way it fits my hand (or my hand fits it). You might want to take a look at Joystick Curves which will allow you to customize the HOTAS a bit. There's a guide to it here. Can't say I've ever had a huge problem with the throttle, but you are right, it's not easy modifying speed by only a few kph.

Not only is it hard for me to control speed, swapping between it and the keyboard feels very off to me. I think at a minimum I would have been better off with just a joystick and not a throttle.

How long have you been using it? It takes time to get used to such things; I still use mouse/keyboard and originally I was like "man this is terrible I have to get a HOTAS" and then after messing with it enough and adjusting controls I'm quite content. Don't think I'll buy a HOTAS for some time, if at all.

I had the same experience: sold it on eBay (for a small profit, amazingly) and bought a CH set-up . . .

And after all that I still use my xbox controller as I can lean back on my seat :) -- but one day I might need a hotas and the CH gear feels like quality, and was great when I did use it.

To each their own I guess, I'm quite happy with my hotas x. Watch Isinona's videos, all done using one of those.

Also, you can open up and modify the throttle easily and without fear beacuse it's pretty affordable. There are possible modifications to make it feel smoother.

I like mine. While I am sure that an X52 or X55 is nicer, considering the huge difference in price I feel like it is a bargain.
Also I do not really trust SAITEK's quality.

I would happily buy it off you, mine's beginning to show signs of weakness after a little over a year (and nearly 2000h playtime).
I was looking at better Hotas but really I can't see why I would upgrade. Best bang for your buck like they say.

I love my HOTAS X. An excellent stick for the price. I might change to a more expensive stick one day, but for the moment i have no issues with mine and in no rush to swap.

I have tried the more expensive X52 and although analogue vertical thrust is awesome I still prefer the HOTAS X for simplicity (and my X52 broke in a month!) Had it a over a year now, would buy another if it broke.

Try lots of bindings, there will be something that works for you, I still have 1 or 2 key sI use on the keyboard but nothing major i can't live with.

Set the throttle to full range in the ED controller setup - that will really help.

Then use shift buttons for all 3 of the vertical buttons on the throttle and you will never need a keyboard again for ED ;) Well not unless you need to type a message.

yeah i wa thinking what will really inhance my gameplay and i thought about getting flightstick and throttle and all that but it just seems too big and it feels like you doing much more work for the same action so i kind of backed away from it
maybe it would give me more immersion into the game i dont know guess the best for me is still keyboard-because it is quick access of my fingers for each action and there is so many buttons i have binded for each action i dont think keyboard is a bad choice
as for mouse its ok,it doesnt feel like im flying a ship with it but its compact and quick and im used to it so yeah

my next guess would be a ps4 xbox one controller because when vr does come out and i like it i will probably need a controller for easy operation at my fingertips

Why do you need the keyboard?

I've set mine up with two 'shift' buttons - it gives me about 30 key binds so I have everything on the stick and throttle.

The only time I touch the keyboard is to type chat or searches in the galaxy view

It's a great piece of kit at an amazingly low price - I wouldn't be without it

Just count yourself lucky you did not spend (and waste) a whole heap of money on a heap of junk called the X55 Rhino!!

Then have to try get a modicum of sense out of what must go down as the worst Support/Customer Service this side of the black Stump!

You should truly count yourself blessed and Embrace what you have. There are people out there who are worse off than you (X55 Owners!!)

I'll give it another go, but something tells me this thing is destined for the donation bin.

Mossfoot gave me a great inspiration to "customize" a cheap keyboard though! If I make that a project, I'll post up pics.

Precise and fun to use in anything from GTA through ED..

When I bought the game I was using my dodgy trackpad on my previous HP Envy (hilarious at the best of times!)..then KB&M..then Hotas X..now Logitech Extreme 3D Pro after extensive testing against the T-16000m.
.
The Hotas X is great fun & value (I loved mine too!) but one thing I can say is..it most certainly is NOT precise!
.
Feel free to post a vid of yourself in action with fixed weapons, to prove me wrong though!

OP, I think it's simply a case of Not Used To The New Thing yet - you're so used to using keyboard&mouse that suddenly jumping to using the HOTAS X and it all feels weird.

Also - to anyone with a HOTAS X - I HIGHLY recommend you start using Joystick Curves with it - the default "curves" for this joystick are too harsh, and you'll be able to get that finer movement control using Joystick Curves. It's literally like turning this HOTAS into a new joystick, with finer control! What's not to like?

Also - I'm using Button 5 as a modifier. So things like chaff I can deploy using Btn5+Btn1 (main fire button). So easy to set up - go to the game's Options menu, select the Thing you'd like to set (e.g. chaff), and when you're asked to press whichever button, simply press Btn5 (or a modifier of your choice) and whilst keeping that pressed, press another button on the joystick and let go of that, and presto!

So back to the OP - seriously, it's worthwhile persevering with this joystick - it's fantastic value for money and you WILL get used to it!

See my above advice - install Joystick Curves and you'll get that precise control!
