I've been flying since February, in a mixture of Private Group and Open, and loved near-enough every minute of it.
I've sampled as much of Elite gameplay as I can and RP-ing my way through various careers. I've run courier missions, explored to the edge of a spiral arm in a Sidey, run a greengrocer service, smuggled drugs and illegal rares, bounty-hunted on behalf of those drug producers, found a cause to fight for and a home system to call my own, experienced the thrill of (NPC) piracy and even participated in an Osmium-rush. I've always roleplayed out my gameplay and so tend to be cautious in my play-style, running from fights when things get hairy enough to risk my ship and my life. After a few months I wondered how long I could go without losing a ship, and what ranks I could reach before doing so. I always hoped that I'd lose my first ship in an epic battle trying to save one of my wingmates, or in defence of my favourite systems Frog and Karugbara.
Today I scanned a system on my way to join the latest Community Goal, helping spread the Cerberus Plague Cure to other systems. I had just got done scanning the system and slowed down from supercruise, entering real-space so I could go for a quick wee in peace. I returned to see my cockpit sparking, my hull at 22% and my thrusters completely gone before I could touch a button. I watched the small explosion of my ship in disbelief.
I'm guessing that a few seconds after I entered real-space, an NPC followed my ship's wake in, shot out my Cobra's drives and put an end to things.
I'm gutted. Not at the ship loss on its own (I can afford the insurance fine) but the fact that I was afk for the experience - it wasn't in any way a meaningful or epic fight for my life.
But I'd like to salvage something from the experience, and so would like to share my last screen-capture of how far I got, with a question for the community: How far did you get before your first death, and how did it happen?
Was it epic?
