So, I finally lost a ship.

Got impatient leaving an asteroid field. Boosted when I thought I was clear and rammed into a rock. That was also my second death. Now I wait till I'm, well clear before boosting.

I got smashed to pieces at my first Landing attempt. I requested the clearance, and then when I got inside a station I was atomized by station defense turrets because LOITERING. I didn't understand what exactly was my docking bay and I got my punishment. I was all like WHAT THE HELL.

Lost a ship once about a 1/4 of the way through my Elite career. Boosted and pulled up into an asteroid that was in the shadow side of a planet in a Viper. I literally never saw it coming, just heard the 'Eject, Eject, Eject' warning and then the rebuy screen. I don't fly in the shadow of planets any longer. :p

Getting stuck in the letter slot between the wall and an T9's phat ass (drunk NPC), getting shot by the stations inner defences because I couldn't free myself in time. Not really epic as well, still funny though.

My first ship-loss happened when I was interdicted for the 5th time in my Sidewinder... A well armed NPC Anaconda took out my shields on the first pass and shredded the hull on the second. Not at all epic - didn't have time to react from the initial confusion. My reaction to interdictions has improved somewhat since then :p

I faceplanted a few sideys at the start of course - figuring out how fast boost is and how little you can control your ship while boosting, but then nothing for a good long while.

Been flying a vulture for ages, then I finally got enough for a Python.

Guess what happened after the very first takeoff? Figured out the hard way how different the two ship's handling is. I didn't even leave a scorch mark on the station.

My first death was when I'd finally made it to an Asp. Was just launching from dock when I heard the Mrs arrive home and plonk our screaming baby in car seat on the front door step as she went to get our toddler out of the car, fatherly urges got the better of me and I pointed the ship at the letterbox, put it at full throttle and left the room to attend to my boy. Came back to an insurance screen. Another time I died because I was busy taking selfies in super cruse near a beautiful ringed brown dwarf, thought I was at zero throttle so went to the loo, came back to an a cooked ship and failed to escape before it went boom boom. Moral of the story is always quit to main menu when AFK.

I’ve been playing since December release. Unbelievably I haven’t been killed yet. I did play in solo for about the first 6 weeks thought. I’ve come very close (8% hull at one time) a few times but always a managed to get away. I’ve always been a cautious player in video games, risk adverse (read quick to chicken out) , which while it helps you survive, it can be less fun. Never had a docking or asteroid accident, flown into a few suns but escaped each time. I'm dangerous in combat but only been in PvP about a dozen times.

I’ll post a screen shot later when I’m home.

I think my first death was boosting on the way out of a space station and missing the opening - ouch. Full of cargo from what I remember too.

I've had a couple of instances of being rammed by an Anaconda when I was just about to kill them, but I was also low on hull.

Then there was this - getting blown up by a Federal Dropship when I was on 63% hull - it happens at 1.40 - I still can't really explain that one (and I have no idea why I didn't have all my pips in weapons).

I kinda wish the game had an ironman mode, would make it more exciting knowing the stakes are so much higher, I guess it could work with extreme penalties for murder...

There's been a few.
My first death was day one when I got interdicted and annihilated before I even learned how to deploy weapons. The speed which my Sidey was destroyed was quite distressing. I hunt Bounty's now in a tricked out Cobra and am harder to kill. Despite this delusion I got rammed by a Python or Anaconda recently (it happened so fast I hadn't even targeted him) which blew out my shields and most of my hull. After that things quickly descended into sparks, warnings and explosions when they turned and locked me up.
Some days you are the windscreen. Some days you are the bug.

My first death was terrible. I was in a sidewinder, and got interdicted by a player. He immediately shot out my drives so I could no longer fly or jump, and then he left me there. I had to self destruct! Yep... my first death, was a self destruction. This was back on release week.

USB keyboard dropped out (it does - that it's hand modified).
Somehow I had a sideways thrust I couldn't control.
Dragged my first hauler sideways across the inside of Solo Orbiter at Altair.

Scrambling with the controls, trying to be gentle, plugging and unplugging the keyboard, trying to change bindings.
It took two minutes.

Shields going down, sparks flying.
Turning to face away from the drag, thrusting away from the walls, getting pulled sideways onto things I cant see.
Track IR glitching out because turning my head far right (the direction of the drag) is at the edge of camera resolution.

Getting straight for a few seconds and trying for the mailslot. Side thrust is still there but not as strong now.
Nearly in the slot. nearly.
Crunch Grind Grind bzzt.

Insurance?

Uh - no.

FUll load of rares?

uh - yes.

Late Dec, or early Jan.
Day 1, stock sidewinder, time to fly!
Jump, jump, jump....
Out of fuel.
Scour the internet, there was mention of emergency beacon, cannot find it in any panel, maybe an alpha/beta thing?
Oh well. Suicide.
Rebirth.
Re-read the manual, scour internet for outfitting tips.

I have made two insurance claims. The first was colliding with something invisible (I think) the second was when I accidentally aggrod some friendlies without realising until it was too late. I haven't died yet but I think I will clear my save if I lose another ship. I don't like this enforced godmode I want some risk like the games I grew up with. Like Elite.

BTW - good OP. Nice read.

Mine if I remember correctly I was in Open as a newbie in a hauler(? might have already been a T6) and I got interdicted by a CMDR and killed twice neither time demanding cargo or whatever.

First combat zone experience, in my Cobra.

Hanging out, hadn't chosen a faction yet, watching the lasers, being wowed by the scale.
Finally pulled up my UI pane to check to see what faction was Federal, selected it, found a target and started to throttle up...

At that moment, a freaking battleship jumps right on top of me, sending me spiralling off and severely damaging my shields.

I panic, amazed, and come about, absolutely floored by the scale of the ship...

"Commander, you are violating the exclusion zone."

Oh god, no, what? It's shooting me! Please stop... noooooo....

And that was the death of my first ship.
