So I got a Cobra, I've been told this is a good ship for exploration... how do I outfit it?

It doesn't seem to be as easy to outfit a cobra as it was to outfit an adder, which was my previous ship, nothing I do seems to make the light year limit go up. While I like this ship, I just want to use it for more than cargo running.

Thats my 2.4mil explorer build for Cobra Mk III. Cheap and cheerful but it will get the job done.

Ziljan is correct, Cobra is fast and will almost guarantee data on return if you dont mind being restricted to jump range. I have explored in a Cobra and I didn't like it due to:

1. Restricted cockpit view
2. Crud LY range

But thats just me. Lots like Cobra for exploring because you can do it on the cheap. I personally explored in DBE after Cobra Mk III then upgraded to Asp.

Step-by-step guide to building an explorer ship:

1. Remove all the weapons
2. Shove in the biggest FSD and Fuel Scoop you can afford
3. Buy all the explorer stuff that you need (various scanners, maintenance units)
4. Fit the extra-extra stuff if you want (fuel tank, heat sink launcher, cup holder, wunderbaum air freshner)
5. Juggle everything else so you will get the lowest mass i.e. longest jump range..."and nothing else matters". Just pay attention to power consumption. (you can go over 100% a little if you turn off non essential systems like cargo scoop, maintenance units, cup holder hydraulics, etc)

This should be true for all ships. Oh and make sure to dock at a station that has every module you need in outfitting.

I'd never go anywhere without at least basic weapons - you never know what might happen out there!

There are only 2 reasons to fly a Cobra instead of Asp:

1) Because it's FAST enough to outrun anything, and that makes your data extremely safe, almost guaranteed to return to base

2) Because you can't afford an Asp.

With that in mind, I wouldn't fly anything slower than this in a Cobra Explorer:

heatsinks are largely unnecessary, and the shield is optional.
This is exactly the same build I used for my exporation Cobra.
.
Unless I've build a ship ready for offense and defense, I avoid the offense part altogether. The Cobra is perfect for this. You could even name it "Brave Sir Robin."

Weapons are heavy and increase mass which reduces LY range. Explorers don't travel with them. This is because:

1. Outside of inhabited space (300LY bubble) you dont need them
2. if you get into trouble in the bubble you just accelerate and boost away and use your light shields.

Weapons are a real no no, don't even bother with them on long trips.

In a Cobra? You'd run away.
Mostly, I'd agree, and as Ironmouse I do run/evade quite a lot - but not always! It can be dangerous out there!
Besides, I'm only carrying basic 2 E/F pulse lasers, which if removed barely increases my jump range anyway.

My build is exactly like that minus the AFMU's. Didn't need them when I went to Sag.A* before (and returned with everything 100% {integrity 0%}), and I'm damned sure I won't need them on this trip. Super-cautious explorer, me. ;)

What can possibly pose a danger you couldn't run away from that a couple of low end pulse lasers could possibly deal with though?

First of all you should ask yourself if the one who told you that Cobra is good for exploring knew what was he telling about.

?

Cobra's are perfectly fine for exploration.

In fact one of the perks for Kickstarter backers at a certain level, was a free "Exploration Cobra". :)
