So I just started to explore and I have questions!

I never thought to much about the basic discovery scanner.

I just equipped it to start discovering new places.

It seems to not be doing anything. All planets and suns still say "Unexplored" even after using the scanner.

Am I missing something here?

Also do I sell the info to the same system to other systems or both?

A quick explanation would help tons and be a time saver =D

The basic discovery scanner identifies the actual asteroid bodies of a system e.g that it is a binary system with two Suns and three planets. I'm afraid you have to get reasonably close to identify their names and status by using your target button.

I have found you can actually sell information in the same system you collected the data, (possible bug) but 'I think' the further away you are to the explored system the more the information is worth, also depending on how much information you gathered.

Hope this helps.

Keep the object locked and get closer to it, the scanner will passively scan the object though it takes some time I think dependant on range.

Hey CMDR. :)

Once you thump the system (stole that line from another explanation - credit yourself for it, other pilot!) you get the read of the unexplored-yet-located objects. You then have to target them and get within range and under your general targeting area to get a better "read" on them; once in range you'll get a "Scanning" msg and a swirly on your lower display. When that finishes, the body you've targeted is then scanned.

And you can sell your data to anywhere. IDK if it helps boost faction relations or not but it couldn't hurt to sell it all to a specific place.

Hey guys! thanks! this helped. Now I understand.

What are your guy's opinion on new systems and finding out the port you are interested in docking at is 100k+ LS away? is it even worth it? I have found it to not be and very time consuming.

Depends, I saw posts today of a station that was light-YEARS away. I've pulled missions last-build that took me out 100 grand or so but even I don't want to fly for real hours to get practically outside the system into deep space. The guy in that thread actually did it though, he's a trooper. It'd have to be some crazy crazy expensive mission to make it worthwhile for any reason other than just to do it, like mountain climbing. There WILL however be someone who will make it their game-life's goal to find the furthest station ever. I still like that they exist but IDW go there.

haha OK i will take your advice!

And yes I love the Thump. The sound effects are amazing in this game. It makes my whole house shake! =D
