So, I started a new game on my second account, and I think most people have forgotten...

How awesome this game is at a low level!

It scales well, feels rewarding AND challenging (relatively), and generally just works. I think it's only once you get to viper/cobra level that the missions start to feel a little sparse on the reward, and I think that's mainly due to the fact that at low level you don't even see the high rank, high pay missions, whereas at a high rank you DO see the low paid ones.

Now I've been playing as a full smuggler/pirate/scavenger for the first time (as opposed to my trading/bounty hunting/Imperial Navy main character). It's a bit of a shame that I don't have a frame of reference for high level piracy, but I do for high level smuggling (I love smuggling, couldn't resist trying it on my main).

At very low levels, npc piracy works pretty well, in say, a sidewinder up to a cobra. I've not come across many npc traders carrying terrible cargo (though whether or not I have just been lucky so far remains to be seen), and with the help of archon delaine, profits are decent.

I would imagine that once cargo drones work while the ship is moving (this should be a priority, I think), then NPC piracy should scale reasonably well. It could use some cookie-cutter communications you could use to threaten npcs and have them react, and traders also need to develop a better sense of self preservation and run, not try and fight when outgunned. But other than that, it works fine.

PVP piracy is a different issue, and is more down to the current combat imbalance/prolific cheating issues. No point in discussing that here, it's been got into plenty elsewhere.

Equally, at low level, smuggling missions give good rewards, and of course only require a small cargo hold. Though smuggling MISSIONS are one of the good things to come from 1.3.

The main issue with smuggling of course, is getting profits from player driven sales (buying legal and plentiful, selling illegal and in demand) to be worthwhile. And making it a bit harder, I do feel like silent running is sometimes a little pointless...

I just thought I'd mention all this to those of you who don't have access to a second account (shout at FD until we get character slots :D ), and hopefully remind you that the game isn't all broken. It just seems that way once you get past a certain point!

By far the best part of ED is the start - that is one thing that has ported well over from the original game.
Starting with a weak ship and no resources is challenging and interesting. Genius gameplay.

Why many players seem to want to give new players "a hand" by gifting them palladium or whatever, is completely beyond me.
They will just spoil it for them.

If I had another CMDR slot I would use it to play the start game many times. But I have too much invested to consider wiping my current character.

The early part of the game is great. I have started many times over on one of my accounts.

yep I cleared my save a while back. Enjoying the full on challenge. I will never go higher than a cobra now. In fact Im not going to A rate it.

Yes, Cobra seems to be the sweet spot for sure.

Same here, I couldn't justify in deleting my save, so bought another account, and loving it again.
Just got my cobra A rated, and I'm still showing as harmless which is cool as I've been interdicted by a couple of Cmdr's now hoping for an easy kill which didn't work out that way ;)
