So I tried to install 4.0...

...Guess what? The install failed.

Any installer/launcher I have come across so far has a feature that checks the available disk space and warns you if it doesn't fit.
But here, I didn't get anything. The installation ran for hours, just to abort on the finish straight because there was literally no space left on my drive.
Thus, there is no way to uninstall it the "normal" way. Is there a way to free that space up again?
As it seems, I would have to uninstall it anyway, because my computer isn't fit for Odysee/Horizons 4.0.

Under Options - Uninstall Game : make sure you select 4.0 first

Can you move something temporarily to exterior storage to free up enough space to install? Once the installation is over the downloaded temp files will be deleted and you should have enough room to move your stuff back.

Sorry, but this doesn't work with a failed, thus incomplete install.

No, sadly not, due to lack of usable external space.

Checked to make sure your recycle bin is empty? No old files you can remove etc? I often find by the time I actually check my recycle bin is pushing upward of a couple of GB's.

My recycle bin holds 222kB at this moment. I seem to be quite efficient in that regard, not much waste, no old files I could delete.
Even if I clean out all the caches, I don't get more than 300 MB. I doubt that this would suffice.

The files are around the locations of the log files - which can vary : https://customersupport.frontier.co...-AppConfig-Client-Log-Update-Log-Game-Folder-

You want to delete the directory under Products that is named after odyssey - probably elite-dangerous-odyssey-64
No Ody here. only "FORC-FDEV-DO-38-IN-40", about 46 GB tall.
From what I've heard, that would mean that I was short of about 4 GB...

The "elite-dangerous-64" folder holds about 20 GB...

But looking into that folder, I found something I can uninstall without hurting any progress. Haven't touched that game since february and is about 11 GB tall. That should suffice.

Maybe I am able to try 4.0, after all.

Thanks for your tips, everyone. Even thos that wouldn't help in this situation still had me larn something more about this game.

Yeah I have so much space you never think about it, but glad you made it up in the end!

Gosh - nobody telling the OP to go buy a bigger drive! Where are all the people from other threads that are telling others to buy EDO so that they can instance with others?

I'm here. I'm one who uses small drives too ;)/ Had 320 Gb drive + 120 SSD for like 15 years. Now I have 512Gb single ssd though.
That is the case where buying bigger does not solve problems. In first place you must keep it clean.

P.S. well, for my taste those aren't small at all. I started with 1.44Mb floppies and 2Gb HDD was super huge - good for anything that days.

If on Windows you could try to limit the temp space for IE, Edge, Chrome and Firefox. Also the windows swap file, turn off auto size and pick a smaller size than the default, just remember to revert back to the system default settings later. But yeah even a Sata SSD would help you, if you have an extra connector for it go pickup a SSD 2.5" driver, internal or external usb.

I remember those days.

Its a laptop, right?
Exactly.
With Windows 10 Home, which apparently doesn't like 4TB SSDs, even external... 😒

But it finally is done. I took a look at 4.0, liked it and uninstalled it. Doesn't really run on this potato chip.
I intend to come back to it as soon as I have a better machine at my disposal.

These mega size downloads for games (try msfs if you want to see gigantic downloads) are a problem when you cant easily swap storage. You cant even easily buy a new bigger drive and use clonezilla to get a bigger solution.

Imho pc gaming is better with a desktop as you can slowly add capability and can easily plug in new drives for cloning

I know. I've built quite a few desktop PCs since 1998...
This laptop was a band-aid when my last PC died. It is more than just a playing station for me, as I live in a rural area where many services are 15+ miles away and gas/petrol is quite expensive.
