Newcomer / Intro So I wanted to try out mining...

I've sampled most of the other roles so far, even done some light exploring. Now I want to try my hand at space mining. Bought myself a Cobra for the task and outfitted it best I could without spending a whole lot, so heres my question:
-
How can I tell where to go? I know I'm looking for planetary rings and asteroid belts of certain quality, but is there an easy way to find these other than just clicking on systems in the galaxy map and hoping I find one that first of all has those features, and then finding ones that aren't "common" or "depleted" (which seems to be the majority in and around the starter systems)?

Metallic asteroid belts yield more valuable ore than rocky ones. Mining is somewhat the unloved child in Elite at the moment. It's a quiet way to spend some time, as long as pirates don't find you, but the rewards are low in comparison to trading. Improvements coming in Powerplay will hopefully correct that by scaling the mechanics.

Go exploring and find an unpopulated system with pristine metallic rings. You can see the status of a ring system by hovering over it in the system view. Statuses are depleted reserves, normal reserves, major reserves and pristine reserves.

If you're far enough out, there should be no pirates, and you might hit on a seam or two of painite, AKA paydirt.

Umaitis is a good system to learn mining. The station there buys metals at good prices, and one of the rings is pristine metallic. Might need to go in SOLO, since the system is quite well known (turns up in Google searches etc..)
