So I went exploring planets last night...

And this is what I saw. :)

Yes, it's SpaceEngine but I have complete confidence Frontier will manage to make it every bit as cool when they put it into Elite. If SE can do procedurally generated worlds so well, I see no reason why Elite can't, either, down to the mountains, terrain, valleys, atmosphere and even weather systems.

It was the most interesting green world I've seen. Breathtaking to say the least. The shots don't do it justice. Look at the aurorae!

Just something to whet our appetite. It's gonna be cool when we can land on these rocks... and even fight over them.

I keep hoping that ONE DAY Elite Dangerous will make planets look as fantastic as they do in SE and give us the ability to fly through and land on them. One day.

Thanks for posting those terrific shots - would be killer to settle down by one of those ridges in my python, crack open a Belhaven and enjoy the chernobyl green sunset!

Imagine how cool the sunrises/sunsets/night sky will be in systems with planetary rings, or binary/trinary/quaternary stars, or nebulae nearby..

Also: I want to land, because I've been in this goddamned chair for about 3 months now. I. Really. Need. To. Pee.

Simple: replace your Docking Computer with the Urine Reclamation module :D

I find it astounding what 1 incredibly talented individual can pull of with SpaceEngine. I'm amazed no one has approached him with an offer to buy his software to implement in a game. It would almost seem like a win-win(-win) for everyone.

Seriously how does one person do all that? I know it's all procedurally generated but still that's an incredible amount of work and skill.

cool.
im curious does space engine give any scientific explanation to why the planet is green?
looks like it could be made up by high concentrate of sulfur and glauconite/epidote maybe?

Nice pics! The best part about planetary landings will obviously be the audio! Breaking the sound barrier and what not, the strain of the hull, the ship warning you about altitude. It's going to be great, waiting is very difficult.

See, I'm curious about that too. I was perusing the planetary data panels and there is an atmospheric tab but it didn't list the composition. Maybe there's a way? I'm not sure yet. I use so many different astronomy programs for my research so after a while all the layers of menus and data starts to glaze over. I'd bee surprised if there isn't a way.

Heh, funny enough, it all started with one book published by National Geographic back in the early 80s or late 70s called "Our Universe." What a grand book it was. It dissected planets giving atmospheric compositions layer by layer, for example. It was a hell of a book for a kid growing up to form a foundational thirst for science.

The green tint is indeed peculiar but in my opinion that's a function of two separate factors. The first the planet atmospheric composition. The colors of the chemicals themselves are one aspect as well as which light they help absorb or reflect. With that last point in mind you also have to consider the light source which in Space Engine is far more accentuated than in Elite Dangerous. Unlike in ED if the star is yellow-orange it will output similarly colored light which interacts with the planet and how it looks. In ED a lot of light sources come out being mostly white.

there's a game very similar to elite called evochron mercenary that has planetery landings, i sure hope elite can manage it too as elite is generally just a more polished version of that game
