So if FD Secretly forcing anyone who plays in Open into running full Meta?

I was thinking about these new changes to shields and how they are telling everyone that its ok because of module reinforcement and hull toughness.

That is all dandy if you are running full meta ( Sorta, big ships will still get pen railed to death )

BUT for the less knowledgeable players or players that weirdly want to do other things like: Mine, Trade, Explore, Passengers etc or even actually Multi-role.
They are now at an even higher disadvantage than ever before ( since the launch of RNGineers ).

I know they want to make NPC's a challenge ( which could be done by ACTUALLY making them a challenge ) but for the normal player who just doesnt have the time to learn how to fight, its going to be gank city.

I've been playing in open like forever and my corvette is not a meta build. It's built for PvE because that's what I encounter 99.9% of the times in open. It's strong enough to escape the occasional pvp encounter, but I don't give in to those fights because of the attitude of the general pvp-crowd. In open you'll only come across other commanders at the get-rich-quick exploit-systems and the community goals and engineers. I guess Fdev is trying to motivate you to enjoy the billions of other systems in the game. :D

You don't need 5k mj of shields to trade or mine, which is what the update is fixing. If that doesn't apply to you, the update wont affect you much.

My T7 isn't meta and I have had very little issues with PvPers catching me, let alone killing me.

I've been playing a long time though and have learned some harsh lessons along the way - if new players are willing to learn how to accept and mitigate the risks of Open then we'll all be in a better place.

This used to be known as getting better at a game and learning lessons, but this outlook seems to be derided as the view of the "git gud brigade" which seems a shame.

Any shield (or weapon / module) changes affect everyone equally, so not sure why there is such outrage when this happens. The devs are doing balance passes to reduce Meta builds so a shieldless tank is more or less equivalent to a shield tank.

The easiest solution is to only allow one SCB and one shield booster to be installed on any given build. No different than fuel scoops or shield gennys; you only get one.

The defining element in any combat should be pilot skill, not how high you can stack your buff bonuses.

That's a valid observation. Each ship teaches you something. People do need to play differently in a T-7 than a Viper.

The Git Gud argument is silly. Not everyone has the same reflexes and some players, like myself, have their twitch gaming days well behind them. Not to mention physical handicaps or other ailments. Some of us are as gud as we're gonna git.

I don't see that much has changed on this front, or will.

1.2, .3, .4, .5/2.0, .1, .2, .3: A wing can likely kill a large e.g. trader before it gets away but probably won't bother because we're boring (never been attacked in >2000 hours trading in open, for example), and a single ship likely can't before you get away (assuming you know how).

Yes, CGs and some engineer systems are dangerous. Yes, some minority of the playerbase are deliberately making them so. No, you're not forced by any means to play along with those guys, and no, no little meta change has any effect on the fact of their existence.

More people in open = lower chance of any one person getting ganked.
If you want open "back", then just go and take it back.

We all seemed to cope just fine without enginners, shield boosters, and SCB's back when the game first came out.

I would of preferred it if shield boosters and SCB's didn't ever arrive, or have them limited in some way. Sometimes the games design seems to be very short sighted at times.

I play in open and nothing bad ever happens. Sometimes I o7 another commander but they seem uninterested in killing me. Must be my winning personality.

If you go to CGs a lot you'll eventually get ganked (which is why I like them) but yeh I agree open is a pretty nice place most of the time. To be honest these changes only really affect people who go into open to actually PVP. It's already pretty easy to escape a ganking provided you have a relatively decent loadout and you know how to escape quickly.

It would be like saying before engineers everyone ws being forced to fly corvette and before corvettes and cutters it would be like saying everyone was being forced to fly an Anaconda
