Newcomer / Intro So if you run out of fuel next to a station you`re screwed?

Ok, so I pushed it and warped to a system on very low fuel, just one `block`(half a block really). As I rushed to a station with about 5 minutes left my block ran out, and just a line was left measuring the fumes I was on... Still, It seemed like I was ok.

I made it to the station, got docking permission, was manouevering for the entrance and all my fuel ran out. Everything stopped. i started running out of Oxygen...

I desperately searched every system on my ship for a last chance clue- maybe I could call the station to pull me in? Or send some fuel? Something? I even asked Astra for help- nothing.

I suffocated to death.

Actually I exploded... Which was kind of unexpected. I was hoping to see my hands clutching at the windscreen gasping as darkness overtook me like a permanent shroud from space... My ship aimlessly floating next to the dock...

Anyway, is there nothing that can be done if you run out of fuel right next to a Station?

If you EVER run out of fuel.....call the Fuel Rats: https://www.fuelrats.com
The website link shows what steps you need to complete so you don't run out of oxygen.

Or (with being so close) you might have been able to shut down non-essential systems on your right-HUD modules tab beforehand (when you thought you may run out of fuel) but maybe another CMDR will know if this is a valid tactic.

EDIT: ninja'd.

I just had a look and yes! That`s the one thing I could`ve done- Shut down all non-essential systems! Dammit!

Anyway, i`m amazed there`s an actual Fuel rescue team!

Thankyou all for this info.

More than a "team" it looks like a whole armada. :D
I hope I'll never need them, but tose guys and gals are really cool!

And about that exploding thing.

As far as lore goes, upon critical system failure (be it hull breach, running out of oxygen, etc..) the eject procedure is initiated - you are locked in the escape pod, put into hibernation and ejected from the ship, which then self-destruct.
So technically you don't die even if you run out of oxygen. :)

Nothing at all.

Well, I tell a lie. Call the fuel rats, they may laugh at you for running out where you did but they will give you fuel.

I bet they see this quite often..

Thats tough luck there mate. I've very nearly done it myself. Took my last jump right on the line and got lucky. With reading this I won't cut it so fine again.

Interesting. I will look at it that way then. :)

Hi,

Yeah a bit late to this, fuel rats can set you straight. We've got over 16,000 rescues to date and an approx 95% success rate <- Losses almost all due to low oxygen and game networking.

In any case there's never any laughing unless it's a really unusual case, we've all been there at some point moving ships, flying tired/drunk or just not paying attention. Some of the best players in game with the most hours have been rescued. Some that do insane player vs player combat, some that do livestreams and tutorial videos. Simply put we refuel everyone :)

silly question but what is to stop the Fuel Rats being called out to an ambush?

Nothing except the general wrath of the community. It's happened before a few times and we've been offered protection by various groups but politely refused. (we don't want to become dial a fight).

Generally we frustrate them into submission, temp-ban any known malicious ip's for a few days, operate in private groups, fly haulers or things with almost no re-buy etc We also have done so many rescues that we can generally sniff an ambush out pretty early although a few get through all rats fly with the knowledge they may get killed randomly.

As for that first comment there was a reddit post a while back of a specific CMDR who posted a video killing a fuel rat. The Fuel Rats don't hunt nor condone any witchhunts but I have to say the community response was rather impressive, he/she was hunted so much that they ended up re-setting save and starting up with a new cmdr name.

Well, if you attack them you certainly won't get help again...

Not technically true, we've had cases in the past where we've refuelled people that attacked us before. Generally if people ambush us we will be very cautious (aformentioned hauler rats etc).

On the attack thing it's interesting, if you attack a fuel rat randomly if they are on duty or not then it's quite normal, we have no exemptions and no right to be let free of any attacks. However, many decide (once being told their target is a fuel rat on a call) to kindly let them go on their way - We salute all these fine players :)

Rats off duty is another matter, they/we are just players in those circumstances and usual rules should apply.

Nice one. :D

I have just been watching several videos on the Fuel Rats work. impressive. Great stuff you guys do in rescuing people in predicaments like I was in.

Sadly, I saw a video where a Fuel Rat was tricked to a call out and ambushed by 3 ships just waiting for him - that was really underhanded. But I saw another where a Fuel Rat killer was found and given his just deserts.

Seriously, I love what these guys do and in time (when I get good), I might volunteer my services! Salute! :)

I tend to be (probably overly) cautious about my fuel supply for that reason. All my ships carry or will carry fuel scoops, even though it means I sacrifice cargo space. Once I hit 1/2 tank or so, I start checking my map for scoopable stars or a close station, no matter how close I am to my destination.

ETA - I'll probably try to join the Fuel Rats myself at some point, when I feel I'm ready.

Before I had heard of the Fuel Rats I died looking at the frost on the inside of my canopy and listening to the scary breathing sounds at an unscoopable star, since then I have never quite managed to run out of fuel but I have got pretty damned close a couple of times. I have been refuelled once but that wasn't by a serving member of the Fuel Rats so it doesn't count.

I have died just meters from an outpost landing pad but that was due to my canopy being shot out and just not being quite fast enough.

Was moving my Eagle 217 LY last night. Was just about to set off when I looked at that sad line of dots where my fuel gauge sits. Went back into outfitting and strapped a fuel tank just to be sure.

Interesting coincidence here. While in Solo play I saw a signal and investigated to find a ship floating in space. The comms popped up saying the pilot had run out of fuel!

I hung around him for ages trying to figure out what to do, but I guess I would need some spare fuel cargo like the Fuel rats have?

I couldn`t do anything and just had to fly away. :(

p.s. I noticed he was a Master too, I was tempted to blow him away for goodies, but i`m not like that.

Yes, if you have fuel limpets, you can save them. Also you can get ambushed by attackers, or another NPC rescue ship turns up... Distress signals are fun :)

Yes a fuel tank with thick black lines between the blobs of fuel is not an encouraging sight even for short hops.
