The best way to try and trigger colonization of a system would be to find a great mining spot, then have many players do the same mining run from this spot to an inhabited system that will buy the rocks.

The one common exception to this pattern was the concept of space travel. This has advanced far slower than pretty much all sci-fi had predicted.
A good example I always remembered is Star Trek. The next generation, in this series, set in about the 2370's they claimed that the human race had physically explored 7% of our Galaxy. Sounds doable with warp speeds that are hundreds of times the speed of light right?...wrong! That's still over 210 million star systems!!

With 10,000,000 players, a good plan handed out for each player what to explore, and 5 star systems per player per day we would be done with exploring the elite galaxy in less than 6 years. How is it unrealistic that the federation has done 7% of the galaxy with tens of thousands ships and most likely hundred-thousands of probes and over 100 years of time. Additional the federation members are not all as young as the humans are, the vulcans for example started their exploration programs several hundred years before the federation even was founded.

I ran into the same thing today. Federation became hostile to me so I decided to try to find some empire systems. I headed "north" (up, in the galactic plane) and ran out of civilized systems fairly quick. Happily, after limping back into occupied space with my ship's integrity at 49%, I did make 200k + for selling my exploration data. Still haven't found any Empire systems, though.

The Empire is due south. Saka is a good place to start.

You went the wrong way. Empire is south/down (which you could have easily figured out by filtering for empire planets and looking at the galaxy map. Filter functions are your friend)

Radio & not all radio waves some bounce back to Earth ie AM, travel at the speed of light , TV , been a stronger signal will travel out , given ED is set in 3300 You should be able to pick up these broadcast where you are , if you have a TV on your ship, but people/stations no. On your own out there Maybe you'll find some ALIENS !

This is a great idea, it could give Frontier a way to provide some content, _and_ make some money at the same time.

Perhaps we have TV's on our ships and when that far out.. we can pick up scraps of old shows that have commercials in them of products that still exist today, and Frontier could perhaps get paid a little bit oh money to put some bits of these shows and commercials into this game while giving us a little bit of content, perhaps we can even record these shows, and replay them at will, or even maybe sell them for exploration data ?

Its nice to know that Timberlake and Biebers recordings are still only a few LYs out. I dread to think what kind of apocalypse aliens will wreak upon us once such heinous recordings reach and pollute their airwaves.

If I had my way Radiation leaks given all over damage would mean going though a wormhole (jump drive) would have blow you ship to bits.
