So I'm in, now what?

If you want to attack NPCs there are some combat zones in the first system. Federation distress is probably the easiest because the NPC's don't attack you unless fired upon.

You will need to pick your faction when you arrive using the functions menu on the right panel

Try the 'federation distress' in the Eranim system. Once in, the make sure you go to systems (your right UI screen) and choose a side. Then blast away and make some money. good luck.

You set a course and search for trouble.

If you want to get your rear end kicked I'd suggest seeking out some of those "signals" in space. I tried to take on a Lakon in my single laser Sidewinder today. Didn't go so well. He got my hopes up as I managed to get his shields down and his hull to about 90% before he started firing, at which point I was pretty much toast. But it was glorious while it lasted.

So are the distress signal and other signal areas NPC only or are there other players as well?

Everything is multiplayer beyond the "multiplayer" option on the main menu. You might encounter other players in any instance. Watch out for red hollow markers on the scanner. If they are flashing red and white you are being attacked by a player.

Eranis conflict zones are a good place to start. Make sure you choose a faction before starting to attack anything. If Alpha 4 was any guide, siding with Eranis Defence forces is the safer option.
