So, is Mantle confirmed for Elite Dangerous?

Videocardz.com published a list of future games with Mantle support. Elite Dangerous is one of them.

It's under "Unreleased (Mantle support pending)" - that seems like a guess rather than anything official.

Starting to wonder if I should have got a R9 290x instead of the GTX 780.

I wonder how mantle handles Oculus Rift performance wise.

Hoping it ges supported as I'm currently running a 7870 and every bit of extra grunt is appreciated. :D

Keep in mind AMD CPU and GPU only. What swung me from a ****ty i5 to the Kaveri 7850k tbh.

Curious to see if we are gonna get more hybrid crossfire capable GPUs though.

The interesting thing is that AMD didn't categorically rule out that other architectures and vendors could use the interface, and there have been rumors about Intel showing interest in the technology.

nvidia are, IMAO, the rather "special" oddball vendor in that they love to push proprietary lock-ins that can only run on their hardware (cf. CUDA, PhysX, G-sync) and I don't see them supporting it, but in the long run it will either be all DirectX (DX12 seems to be aiming in the same direction as Mantle, reducing overhead and making things more parallel) or that and something else that's not OpenGL, with Mantle being the only real visible contender.

Is that right? I thought it didn't have anything to do with specific CPUs? Your Kaveri is CPU and GPU. The equivalent intel part would using intel integrated graphics, so that wouldn't work by itself. But I thought it would work with an Intel CPU and a discrete AMD GPU.

It does, I have an AMD GPU and a Intel CPU and Mantle works on it.
Mantle is GPU specific as it only works on GCN GPUs
It doesn't matter what CPU you have.

Where it helps out best though is if you are CPU limited as it reduces the overhead on the CPU.

If you are not CPU limited/bottlenecked Mantle has less of a performance boost.

Thus is works better on crappier AMD CPUs than it does on Super Duper Intel CPUs.

Well technically an APU and I will also have a discrete GPU (270x or better). In certain tasks mantle helps out quite a bit ( gaming, video processing, etc) to bring an AMD APU closer to parity with Intel chips in the same task. By what I have seen only intense number crunching ( simulations basically ) do not gain much from mantle but considering I am primarily a gamer with a side helping of enthusiast level video editing and what number crunching I do require wouldn't stress a 60nm Intel chip ( Origin experimental data crunching and processing ) so a flat upgrade over the 7850k with the 270x would be a Intel CPU around twice the price and there is no need for it personally .

I'm hoping there will be a big push for open GL so I can finally ditch windows and move to Linux as more games will hopefully be supported.

My experience with mantle on BF4 wasn't that great tbh (R9 290) but that was some time ago - has it been improved since then?

In BF4 Mantle gave quite some FPS improvments up to 50 % or more. But Im still getting random stutters with Mantle enabled, which makes the game unplayable.

Ive got an I5 4670K paired with a 7870 2GB. Elite is giving me 60 fps+ all the time, not sure if Mantle is even needed here. It could be interesting for the planetary stuff and the walk around expansions tho.

Depends on config, by what I know they've been improving it quite a bit since Feb and March but word of warning : nascent tech is always gonna be buggy until it gets a few solid iterations, Nvidia for example lost quite a few GPUs due to a driver/game bug with EVE-Online's CQ back when it launched in 2011 ( pretty sure the fried cards were also of the newest generation at that time too, though this is friend of a friend stuff so grain of salt required ).
