So, is Mantle confirmed for Elite Dangerous?

And you make allot of assumptions getting to the notion that the past will repeat itself. Sit back and see how things pan out.

until AMD release everything related to Mantle as an open platform including the hardware aspect? I can see no difference between the old API wars.

Go back and check the initial conditions then vs those now. The idiocy you described happened then simply cannot now, even if GCN only AMD still is one of 2 major GPU makers so it will either help them along or kill them, my money is on help, because say what you want about it both sides have proprietary and likelihood is one will start supporting Linux to break the stalemate.
OpenGL is likely gonna remain the mostly top kid in crossplatform applications though.

Yeah both sides have proprietary ****. But its minor proprietary ****.
Mantle is a definite step back until they open source the whole thing.

I swear if NVIDIA come out with their own proprietary full API like AMD have. I'll have to go on a killing spree at their head offices.
It'll be just like the 90s all over again.

Except there are only two choices not 10...for bloody sake most of the time the architectures between the cards causes issues for the API. Better two hardware locked but platform unlocked choices than what we currently have.

Microsoft were big on child soldiers back in the day. You think they won the war through technological superiority and widespread access alone?

hiss! the truth revealed!
I am actually an immortal and ageless justin bieber!
I must flee quickly to my lair in some French Canadian ****hole

Meanwhile we have a well established platform agnostic graphics API that people are ignoring for some baffling reason.

Not baffling at all. PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC = all DirectX.

OSX, Linux, etc...tiny, tiny market share in comparison. Android/iOS, most people are hitting a middleware platform like Marmalade/Unity/UE4.

Sometimes a single proprietary API is a better way to move forward in a fast paced technology space. There's a reason Flash, Java, Silverlight are still lingering on the web, it's because open standards evolve at a snails pace.

See :

Plus DirectX 12 is going to offer lower-level hardware access a la Mantle, on a
hardware agnostic API.

OpenGL is huge. Just not as huge in games as DirectX.

Android and iOS combined is huge number now of OpenGL installations. For some strange reason that's why COBRA is already ported to iOS (OpenGL ES) and will be used as starting point for OS X port (OpenGL 4.1 I assume).

Hardware agnostic API is is just reaffirming *bad* de facto practice already in place - having different code paths for different cards, it is admitting DirectX can't deal with providers doing **** in their drivers. I personally don't see it coming anytime soon or being highly popular. Engines will implement support, sure, but as far as I know real numbers are few and random to see true economy in place.

So I hope FD stays away from Mantle. With such good writing as they have now, they don't need that. AMD support gor their graphics cards is seriously lackluster.

As far as I know:
- PS4 uses a proprietary Sony library, developed by their ICE team. It has no relationship to direct3d whatsoever.
- Xbox 360 uses a 'derivative' of direct3d, but it is a lower level API that is mostly unrelated.
- Xbox 1 is believed to use 2 different APIs. AFAIR the API for gaming is called 'mono', the other API (for the "non-gaming OS") is probably direct3d.

The only system using direct3D is windows.

Also PS3 used OpenGL. PS4 uses OpenGL plus PlayStation Shader Language.

Only DirectX usage is Windows and XBox One. And Even XBox One is different.

Just assumed Xbox would use direct3D, even if a lower-level API, oh well, this is why I'm not a graphics programmer :) I have done some raw OpenGL stuff in C++ and dabbled in Stage3D, I understand the fundamentals of stuffing buffers through shader pipelines. I guess even with the latest round of hardware being broadly similar, the dark arts are all about finessing the bus between CPU/GPU/RAM, and also where the finer points of the APIs come out.

I guess there's a case that DirectX as stagnated a little, but anyone that was a gamer in the dark days pre-directX appreciates it (even if the first few version were a pain, it beats SET BLASTER=A220 I=5 D=1 T=3 and all the nonsense :))

Mantle seems to have been enough a kick up the **** for MS to kick on with DX12, so I would rather see FD focus on that.
