So, just bought my first Python. What's it best at and how should I build it?

Bought it so I could earn credits for upgrading my Vette. Any advice would be grateful. o7

Its an "All Rounder". So you can do pretty much anything in the game with it.

I use mine for USS hunting sessions, material gathering, planetary scan missions with the SRV as well as Raw Material Prospecting on planets with the SRV.

It is also the perfect ship for those 180t A to B cargo transport missions. Since these lucrative missions are only offered at or to Outposts, the Python is about the only ship with the cargo capacity and the medium landing pad capability to do them.

Those missions can pay up to 10 million CR for a 5 minute A to B run, so if you are looking to earn some $$ using your new ship, I highly recommend seeking those missions out!

As far as combat... The easiest and most cost effective load out would be Dual C3 Beam Lasers in the 1&2 Slots, a 3E Turreted Burst Laser in #3, and Turreted Multi-Cannons in 4 and 5.

You have a ton of options of course with weapons, but the above is very effective and easy to master.

I own two pythons. One is a mission runnner with 280 cargo space which can land at outposts aswell as stations. It’s very good in this roll, and earns many credits. The second is a combat ship for hazres, because I like a challenge. It does surprisingly well, but turns slowly compared to some other ships.

Flimley

Mr. Facetanker

As others mention though, it's an all-rounder. I have another Python set out for general-purpose mission running, and want another for dedicated passenger runs.

This. Outpost cargo missions.[yesnod]

I assume this is for PVE as the python is a flying coffin in open. It's good at everything but excellent at nothing. It's not cheap to upgrade either, so why did you not update the Vette?
From memory I think the rebuy on my Python that I sold ages ago was 12.6 million, and the rebuy on my Vette is just over 28 million.

If you want fast money, by an Aspx and fit a class 6 passenger cabin.

My Python has been the flagship of my fleet for quite a while. It's greatest asset is that it has the largest cargo capacity of all the medium pad ships, making it the king of cargo missions. In fact, there are cargo missions with good payouts that only the Python can complete, due to cargo quantity and medium pad requirement. Other than that it is decent at everything else, but not as good as the ships that are designed specifically for those roles.
It's a decent combat ship, but it's poor pitch rate keeps it from being great, while it's mediocre jump range prevents it from being a great explorer. That said, it's still good enough at those roles to get by.

I primarily use it as a mission runner.

I wouldn't say it's best at anything really, just very capable all around. Maybe being able to land at medium sized pads?

For me, it's the largest ship I care to use with its handling and whatnot. I generally prefer small ships in the game.

My Python is a multi purpose ship. It's not great at one thing, but good for some res hunting, good for mining, good for trading, good for exploration. :)
And yes, being able to dock at any station is a great bonus :)

From my experience, one thing that it is good for is flying like a brick.

However, as a Trader Python, that doesn't really matter.

I use mine to check out systems and earn a bit of rep while more my specified ships are on the transfer timer.

I've had a Python for a bit and it's great at passenger and cargo run missions for sure. Delivery to outposts is where the money is at. Even if you are not allied, you can still get some decent pay for these. Python is merely ok at combat and forget about maneuverability. It's a little tough to deal with heat issues as well so If you wanna put beams on there, go with efficient engineering. I have three large beams right now and had to put efficient on all of them to prevent melting my ship during combat. Honestly if your looking for credits using this ship though, avoid combat and go with either passenger missions or cargo runs to outposts. Or do both!

I second this post.

My Python is my primary go-to ship for virtually everything but heavy hauling or dedicated combat.

It's best at everything.

I build mine how I want at the time, with remote workshops and pinned blueprints I can even engineer new modules after swapping them out, at least a bit.

But yeah, there is no build for a python in my opinion, if you are going to mine, fit a refinery, if your going to shoot stuff, stick some hull and shield cells on it and swap out some utils for shield boosters, if your going to trade, fill up on cargo racks, or stick passenger cabins in to do tourism.

You can also fit a bit of everything and do basically every mission ever.

Its a necessary evil. Honestly under the opinion that python should’ve been ranked locked to a ship that requires post gunship and clipper access prior because it makes far too many other ships obsolete and somehow easier to acquire since money is easy compared to rank. Noticed my bottom large barely got any fire time unless I was running fixed or launchers. Ultimately settled for 2 large beam turrets on fop which is about perfect for the distributer and 3 launchers(packhounds if LYR) for casual mission and for res I go 2med/1large fixed cannons(or packhounds if LYR).

So....no one mentioned this, I thought I would just say...it makes for one HELL of a pirate ship 😉 the number of internal compartments and utility mounts allows you to retain over 100tn cargo space while packing a respectable set of limpet controllers for loot pickup. The weapons mounting (five hardpoints) gives you near endless options for attack style, and since your targets will be traders, the lack of maneuverability isn't really an issue. Even if you go for an escorted target, once again the number of internal compartments comes into play, allowing me to equip a class 5 SCB with my limpets and 128tn cargo. And personally, after buying my first Clipper and flying it for about an hour, I went back to the Python and havent gone back since. Reason being Clipper: max PP class 6. Python: PP class 7. Never could find a loadout I liked on the Clipper without going over my max power output. Ive always had power to spare on the Python, no matter what I've put on it.
