So much for surface mining

So..

I can land on a planet, scout around in my SRV, collect a heap of cool sounding minerals and ore.

YET.. I can't sell these? thats quite a blow to a miner.. I might as well stay mining in space then.
Please tell me I'm doing something wrong here, otherwise my reasons for heading to the surface just vanished.

Someone found these on the surface, so there might be still hope that we get our own surface mining equipment, yet:

Isn't the materials that you collect in the SRV useable only for synthesis of other materials/compounds?

I wouldn't write off surface mining yet, this is only the first release beta after all. Lots more to come in the future.

Yeah .... baby steps. This is a good step in the right direction and just opens things up for new features. This is the underlying basis for regular planet exploration as well.

From here I hope to see the planetary map expanded beyond a basic wireframe sphere to include some form of scanner and a heatmap to pinpoint where a lot of the minerals actually are. You can scan those sorts of things from space to find POI and then go to them.

Also in the SRV we should get some sort of minimap telemetry from our ship in orbit of our location and nearby objects to help lead us.

How exactly does one collect said materials? I thought this wasn't released yet and I just drove around for about an hour checking out the sights and listening to my metal detector thing clicking the whole time, but I had no idea how to grab stuff.
