So, my stick broke.

Long story short, my wife ended up knocking my Logitech 3D pro off my desk last night, causing the "twist" functionality to mess up. Basically the ship constantly twists to the left. I'm not too broken up about it, since I only bought the stick to try out Elite: Dangerous (I didn't enjoy flight sims much before this game), but since I am hooked, I must buy another stick.

This is what I am thinking about buying. It's a Saitek X52, stick and throttle combo. Will this serve me well in my travels? The price is quite good, and the feature set looks sweet.

Well, opinions about the Saitek range of HOTAS systems are quite split between good and crap as it seems that saitek is quite lacking in terms of qualitycontrol nowadays. That means, you can get either a stick that will work without problems and last you "forever" (like my X36F thats still working almost like new after 16 years) or you can end up getting a HOTAS that will start to show malfunctioning parts within weeks.

Being a former X52 owner and currently run an X52 Pro I can say it's a great stick for this game with one big BUT!.

My stick was made when it was still wholly owned by Saitek(it's prolly 5yrs old now)My X52 been passed along to a mate so he could play ED with it and it's even older both are still working without any issues.

The problem now with these sticks are is that MadCatz now owns them and the quality has now become VERY hit and miss. If you get a good one you're golden you get a bad one and you may end up returning it until you get a good one.

I love my stick and you should too but I fear for new buyers...

So, basically what you're saying, is that quality control is an issue for Saitek now. Well... I suppose I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on this thing, and if it goes badly, I'll just return it and get something a little more expensive. I can't figure out how MadCatz stays in business.... I only ever owned one of their controllers as a kid, and I knew it was crap back then.

Yeah so you also know MadCatz reputation for "quality" ;). This is the sad part about these sticks now...

I think if you buy this you're wife isn't just going to knock it off the desk, but she'll prolly throw it through the window!!

If you're lucky and the drivers work, you'll be golden. If you're unlucky and the drvers don't work, then you'll be in hell.

I had the drivers working, then I reinstalled Windows 7, and could never get it working again. Then I bought a Windows 8.1 laptop, and the drivers were hell, then after (refreshing the image and) installing a bunch of other software (and necessary components) the drivers magically worked.

When they weren't working in Windows 8.1 their support suggestion was to disable the USB 3 functionality of my USB ports (forcing them down to USB 2), as it happens that wasn't necessary at all when the drivers started working. Basically their drivers are missing some important dependencies, and if other software happens to have installed them, you'll be fine, and if not you'll suffer.

Fantastic HOTAS, horrific driver support.

I use a Thrustmaster T16000M which is a great joystick. very precise.

But I also use the throttle from the Thrustmaster Hotas-X

This combination works very well for me, and not so expensive

Yep 'performance enhancers' we call then or blue pills ;-). Should be plenty around now all the SL guy had gone off to enjoy theirs.

ah but theres a problem with those blue pills once you use them you cant get your stick hard anymore without them

I bought an X-55 back in March (from the Madcatz UK store), and there are enough buttons and hat switches to allow (almost) keyboard free play when I'm wearing the rift and looking like a fool. US pricing would put it at $200, if you can stretch to the extra I would consider it a viable option. Also purchasing direct from Madcatz means they will struggle to worm their way out of any warranty replacements, should that become necessary... ^^;

But you've still owned one...
