Newcomer / Intro So Solo Play Won't Let You Pause The Game???

So I know it's supposed to be online all the time (even though Braben promised us single player offline) but I was just playing Solo Play and got caught short... Opened up the esc menu to pause the game and went to the loo... came back just in time to see the game had kicked me out of the menus and a pirate was hammering my cargo laden ship.

SAY WHAT????? If you are in Solo mode you should be able to pause the damned game!!!! Can anyone tell me the reason why not?

I loved the original Elite... but this game has given me almost as many screaming fits than Frontier II did... maybe even more. I won't go into how many design errors are in the game because I would be here all night but if it says Solo play it should at least warn you that you cannot pause the damned game if you are in space. And the number of times it has taked over 60 seconds just to open the local system map... why the hell does it need to look online every time for something I had looked at previously. It should be cached locally. :S

I keep wanting to like this game but just when I find myself enjoying it, along comes a glitch or a bug or a design error (can someone tell me why the hell I hear a slow down noise WHEN THE SHIP SPEEDS UP and vice-versa lol). The only reason I got the game after Frontier II was that FD did a good job with Screamride (Love that game to bits).

Maybe Star Citizen will be better.

I personally miss only one thing in Elite: Dangerous. When ESC is pressed on the keyboard and game menu appears, there should be one large big great red and yellow blinking banner "THIS IS NOT A PAUSE MENU, FOLKS!"

Seriously, even in solo, this game is running nonstop, NPCs are flying and shooting... If you need to stop playing, use "save and exit" from game menu. If your ship is out of danger, it exits instantly.

The universe doesn't pause, it keeps going even though you are in the menu.
Everyone is part of the same universe, so it would be really tricky to pause it locally.

And the "Slow Down" noise isn't necessarily slowing you down.. it's telling you to slow down.

Easy with the attitude.

As above, or "Save and Exit to Main Menu" if you are only going for a quick comfort break.

As replied previously, the universe you play in does not stop or pause. You, as a player are part of that universe. It's a living and dynamic world, simulated on your computer screen. You cannot pause your game, because that would mean pausing the universe and everyone else.

You can drop out of the game for a while, that's the only pause-like option at the moment.

I agree it could be pointed out in a more visible manner though. I mylsef learned that lesson the hard way many moons ago.

The acceleration/deceleration sounds when super cruising are a little un-intuitive. The "engines racing" sound happens when you're approaching a mass (star, planet) and the ship is actually auto-decelerating. Whereas the engines sound like they're winding down when you're accelerating after passing a mass.

It does make more sense when you consider that to slow down in space, you don't reduce power, you need to increase rewards power - hence the engine racing sound when slowing. (This is of course assuming the slow down when flying by (but not very near) a planet is due to the engines auto-slowing you down, and not a gravity well.

Because you are in Solo mode, not in a Solo game. The online background still goes on around you - you just don't get to see any players. They're there though, buying things in Stations and thus affecting prices, etc.

Note that NO KEY AT ALL is labelled "Pause" in ED. That was your big mistake, assuming ESC to menu paused the game.

Let us know in a couple of years or so, lol.

Oh, did they finally remove the Pause key binding? It was there last time I looked, but admittedly that wasn't since 1.1.

Laying this entirely at the OP's feet is a little disingenuous. You have noticed, haven't you, that when you press escape the entire screen darkens and the top says "PAUSE MENU"? This is about as significant as a cosmetic defect can be, and the fact that the game never ever pauses is not even remotely obvious to new Solo players.

I think the screen shouldn't darken at all, then it would be more obvious. I still think solo SHOULD have a pause function. yeah the galaxy can keep going but just make the Ai ignore the player??

The solution is the ninja wee. When you go, set the speakers to 11, when you hear the interdiction noise, NINJA WEE back to your seat and hit full throttle , Its that or gaming nappies ( diapers to the yanks)

Actually if you are playing solo, it would not pause any other players if you paused, just the npc's and the market could keep right on chugging along. It's laziness that it's still broken.

All you have to do is exit the game. It takes, what, 10 seconds longer?
You can also exit instantly by unplugging.

Yes they did! I noticed this yesterday! Hurrah!

Yes, confirmed. There is no pause at all, ever. Just chalk it up to another lesson learnt about the cruel, dangerous galaxy you have gotten into.

Yeah, same thing happened to me not long after starting...luckily it was only a number 1 ! :)

No it's not. The galaxy lives in real time, celestial bodies orbit other celestial bodies, everything moves, community goals are fulfilled, wars are happening, governments collapse etc. How do you imagine a "pause" acutally? You just freeze in motion and the universe keep moving? And then you're what - teleported to bring you back in line where you should be if the game wasn't paused? Drop you out of the pause in the same place you've paused? What if there is a planet in your spot now, because the universe is not paused?

Understand that you're connected to one and single universe in all the modes, the difference is that in Solo you don't SEE other players, but they're still there having an effect on the world you play your game in.

It's not rocket science really.

Not any more it doesn't. I believe now it says "Game Menu". I agree the complete darkening and subduing of sounds might be a bit confusing, although if you're in a station or SC you can actually see the game just keep on going faintly in the background. Perhaps only darkening the area where the menu resides unless you make a selection would be a better solution to making you more aware of that.

AND they removed the word "PAUSE" from the menu screen itself. Nice!

Now if they'd just make it look a little less like the game is paused we might see fewer of these posts. :)

Yeah, but it's a pretty good simulation of rocket science.
