So that was a new experience - switching to silent running and immediately getting subsystems demolished.

Doing a rares run in Open I was leaving Altair Solo Orbiter at 16.35 PM (approx) 19th of July. I had filled my hold at Altair (reaching the max in my T6 of 96 tonnes).

I was carrying illegal cargo, so on leaving the station I enabled Silent Running and dropped a heat sink. Heat at 2%
All of a sudden I was immediately getting fined for dropping cargo in the station and when I checked my hold I was venting cargo. At first I thought it was some sneaky pirate having launched Hatch breakers on me, but I realised that ALL of my subsystems were taking heavy damage, including my cargo hatch.

Ship heat was at around 86% at this time. I ejected another heat sink, and disabled silent running but the damage kept occurring and most of subsystems malfunctioned including chaff, heat sink launcher and the cargo hatch went to 0%.
There were no hostiles near me, no one was firing on me, I was just losing all of my precious rares!

As an act of panic I immediately logged out without any issues (no 15 second timer) and when logging in again I floated at the station 20km away with no issues other than around a half million of credits lost due to having ejected 39 tonnes of rares and a repair bill of 20k.

Of course when I tried to record the replay using AMD Gaming Evolved it somehow didn't work. Quite annoying when you need it the most.

I filed a support ticket and got a small refund (250.000) and some time lost but it was quite a hectic experience.

Anyone experienced something similar to this?

Wow! That's very worrying!
Have you successfully used AMD's Gaming Evolved before?

Yeah, multiple times, though recent June update made it very finicky and changed a lot of the replay functionality (moved it completely into plays.tv so you need to register there).
IMO the app is needlessly complicated and convoluted since it works as a portal to many other services.

I would love to have an alternative that can make replays for 20 minutes but I have found no other options... :(

Why bother with silent running when deploying heatsinks have the desired effect of lowering your temps?

Because it decreases your chances of getting scanned even more?

I've never had that happen to me, OP. Sounds really scary though - you just started to cook for no reason?

You'd have to be dropping heat sinks every few seconds to keep the temp cool enough to mitigate detection.
Silent running closes up your heat vents, so no heat is released. You only need to eject the heat when the temp starts to get uncomfortable.

Ermmm... I thought silent running was the de facto protocol for avoiding the system rozzers?

Silent running is one method. Or you could go very fast. Or go fast and silent.
Either way is far too easy as it currently stands and it would be nice if the security patrols had their AI smartened up a bit.

I never use silent running as it takes down your shields too, i just fly in fast and drop heatsinks, works for me.
And AMD gaming evolved, i use it too, but i have it set to record up to 10gb in the back ground all the time, when i quit the game, the video pops up with the last 2-3 hrs gameplay, i just select the required section i want. I don't use record highlights at all.

Thargoids?

That's the thing: It does not. In any event, getting into and out of a station only requires one heat sink, maybe two, to avoid scans.

Silent running reduces your emissions to zero. Dropping heat sinks reduces your internal temperature, your emissions stays pretty big as soon as you are above about 20°C.

Hmmm, I would like to see cited sources for this since we are merely sharing different conjecture based on experience here. I have been scanned many times while trading and dropping heat sinks, I have yet to be scanned while enabling silent running and heat sinks.

Could be nice with someone patient enough to test it :)

Happened to me once, but not with silent running. I was delivering many tons of (legitimate) stuff to a station in my trading Anaconda, which I keep in tip-top condition - repair, refuel and fix ship integrity at every station stop. As I was approaching the slot I got a "Warning - Module Malfunction!" and all of my cargo started spewing out, and I started getting fined. Like the OP I thought it was a hatch-breaker or something, but my shields were at full strength and I wasn't being attacked. I think the ship was overheating, too. The only thing I could think of was that there was a hacker player somewhere around. And no, I hadn't hit "silent running" by accident, as I have unbound that key binding and shields were up. I got out of there fast. It was mighty strange.

The most scary part was slowly losing half of my cargo that I spend 2-3 hours collecting and looking forward to selling it for a nice profit AND getting fined for littering at the same time.
And then FD reimburses me with only the price that I paid for it (why don't you push in the knife just a liiiittle further please!).

Sounds like you took your eye off the ball when you turned n silent running and over heated without realising.

T7 mi smugglin ship - neva usin heat sinks, nor silent runnin.

Yuh want to avoid scans? Speed king. In fast - out fast.

T7 feelin good when runnin A grades. Bold smugglin ship. T9 too slow. T6 too ickle cargo. Shielded T7 gettin aal mi love! :D

I do it all the time, just keep temps down to around 15, works every time for me. even in an Anaconda and a T9. You can see it here at near the end of this video, thought i was wanted here. But just hostile, still did it to be safe.
Around 18.30 mins. in fact i did it twice, but scraped the letterbox too much the second time, but still got through ok.

YES. Have a look to your key bindings. There is a chance of having "Silent Running" and "Eject all cargo" both bind to DELETE key.I lost cargo, worth about 7 millions and got a 2 million fine for ejecting 540 tonnes of cargo inside the station, in one go, due to this stupid default key bind. Remove the "Eject all cargo" bind at all. It's better for your wallet.

Read my post again. I have unbound jettison all a long time ago, ship was slowly losing cargo due to malfunctioninf cargo hatch. Temperatures were 80% and lower.

Temps, as I wrote, never rose higher than 86% and the damage still occurred after turning silent running off and ejecting sinks. Cargo was slowly being ejected and not all at once like a jettison all would do.
