So THAT'S why Griefers are killing so many traders...

I just noticed in the rules for the "Race to Triple Elite" competition, that all progress in this has to be made in Open Play rather than Solo.
Aside from the fact that this really sucks "because many #reasons", it does at least explain to me why there might be so many griefers out there currently.

Destroying traders has a double-win scenario for the griefer. THey get points towards their Elite combat rank as well as stunting the traders' chances towards their Elite Trading rank.

So, basically this competition has given those who like to play just to annoy others a viable reason for doing it even more so. GG, FD. :D

At least I will be able to continue to play peacefully in Solo now without wondering how close I ever came in the competition I never had a hope of even seeing the finish line in! Heh!

also nobody kills type 9s, which are the only people you'd have to worry about. People in tiny ships aren't going to get it, infact I'm fairly certain theres already an Elite Trader or 6 lol, more if we include solo mode players and the gamma brigade.

Edit: even if killing traders counted you need so many you'd get hammered by anyone actually trying to do it, I just killed a hundred + ships in an extraction zone, how long would that take interdicting and killing traders? days probably lol..

I doubt it. The guys going for the competition are really going for it. Hanging around Lave and killing some traders is gonna get you nowhere. At all. Remember there are already people with elite ratings in trading (the others too, anyone knows?).

I heard there's also an Elite combat pilote out there somewhere. Got it by grinding warzones for days on end.

Preventing trade with station X is a valid reason for blowing up traders. Trade helps the ruling factions of a system so it's one way to effect change in the background simulation. Particularly so with players, since they tend to grind the same route.

Killing clean ships doesn't help your combat rank afaik.
If that were true, it would mean fighting in anarchy systems would have no value, as everyone appears 'clean' without a KWS.
As I've personally ranked up my combat status while fighting in an Anarchy system and killing 100% 'clean' targets, I'm skeptical your claim is true.
But as always, happy to be proven wrong. :D

This seems like something worth investigating further perhaps.
If we could possibly get some sort of "XP-counter" (Eurgh!) at least that would help track what is giving progress in ranks etc.
