Engineers So the Engineers...Are Terrible

Been looking forward to this new feature mechanic a while now. Finally made it out to see about enhancing weapons, and...this is a pretty crap mechanic.

There's literally nothing to look forward to, except for more grind. This time for obscure parts the finding of which is ENTIRELY based on RNG.

This isn't fun. This isn't interesting. Fun and interesting is playing the game. Not constantly dropping into a planet - which takes several minutes - and THEN delving into awful crafting menus for minutes at a time.

My suggestion:

Scrap the grind. Entirely. Just admit you were wrong and get rid of it.

Then, we fly down, pay the Engineers some credits and tweak our weapons using a series of sliders. For each thing we improve, something else gets worse. Sort of like now, without the random GARBAGE.

Because all of this RNG nonsense is just that: Garbage. Pure filler. Its not fun. Its not believable or immersive. Its an awful time sync that isnt even FUN to participate in at all.

I think everything would be fine if they cut down on materials (drastically), adjust some drop rates, give more drops from each source, and reduced the extreme mod stat overlap.

Then I could probably tolerate the double RNG of finding materials and mod stats. But they really should have polished up each activity before requiring them to be used in RNGneers. Just about every activity forced upon the player, barring combat, all still feel very unfinished and unfun.

I like it, means every Cmdr's loadout is different.

One change, allow us to pick the special effect we want. Friend or foe lasers don't help me.

2.1 beta was actually fun.,...it was all about taking your modded ship out and testing the universe.
We even had the enhanced AI against our mods...because we used fish.
It was a blast...the forum was hopping with all kinds of positive threads and posts....because it was fun.

Now we need to grind and grind to get to level 5 mods...it is not so fun.
Perhaps in 6 months or more when we get our ships how we like them, it will be fun again.

Bring back the fish!

I suspect that if the NPCs have modified weapons then some of them must have modified thrusters and other equipment as well. That would help explain how some of them can now literally fly circles around my corvette while others are not as nimble. So until everyone has clean drives or dirty drives level 5, we will continue to be outflown by the AI that magically has all the upgrades. I guess those engineer upgrades are not so rare after all.

To me, the most fun I had in the game was during 2.1 beta...once our weps and ships were modded...and faced against a modded AI...it was thrilling and on the edge of the seat entertainment.
This sequence of top teir modded ships fighting was not just fun to play, but a beautiful sight with all the different colors and such.
It was combat at its finest, both visual and game play...

Thats the sad thing about this whole rng and grind system we have here...the potential of this 2.1 patch/update will be a long time before it is realized on how it improved the game.

Once the majority of the player base reaches toip tiers in their mods and rng rolls, the beauty will show itself again.
Im still racking my brain why they would hide all this work and potential behind a dull grind and rng.

Just admit you were wrong and get rid of it.

They didn't do that for PP, they're not going to do it for engineers.

I also dislike the engineers, but for different reasons. I like the randomness, I don't want to see all ships with the same mods with the exact same slider settings - that'd be boring. You know that's going to happen. They might as well have done nothing except introduce new modules to buy.

I like that you have to do something different to get the new playthings other than grind more money. I don't like how little control over how I get the materials for those new playthings. I like doing the work to get my upgrade, I don't like the fact that all that work can be lost by one bad roll that I have zero control over.

Other than that, it's cool.

True!

Tried to like it, but indeed terrible as is.

Reduce the amount of different materials, loose the need for comodities and thus a cargo hold and get rid of the anti "blaze your own trail" felosophy.

I feel you should be able to upgrade your ship fully without the need to stray from your chosen profession.
Don't get me wrong it's good that you can use all proffessions, it gives ppl who like to mix it up a actual reason to do so... it just shouldn't be forced on you.

Quit early yesterday when first I got a false positive on the special effects weel (second time) and after I sucked it up and wanted to continue I found out I needed to mine to get my railgun upgraded. (Not to mention figure out where and the other stuff needed )

Why isn't that stuff for sale?! Why are we upgrading our ships with second hand half blown up garbage?

Just use the common materials for synthesis, rare materials for upgrades and make that stuff buyeble at bases for ridiculous amounts of credits.

Can't be that hard to balance out the time it takes to collect a material and the time it takes to make the credits to buy that material.

That way engineers will keep giving long time players somthing to do, without forcing them to do things that they don't like.

Now they're here, they're not going to get pulled.

OP> Your reacting to the apparent grind to upgrade your ship. How/why is this any different to the grind for cash for a better ship?
The key difference being that it obliges you to try out things you wouldn't normally do. I'm not a miner, but spent probably 6 hours mining to get refine 500 tons of ore. I know think that I'm an "ok" miner and can get by.

More to the point, give it 2-3 months and this will all be over, as you will have unlocked everything and have access to whichever upgrade you want. Sure, you might need to then grab some materials, but by then you'll know what you're doing. More importantly, you'll be able to modify your ship however you like. So if you want to focus on combat, grab some big tough shields, weapons etc. If you're a trader, focus on running away. Engineers will ENABLE better customisation for your own wants.

Stop worrying about the short term grind, it will NOT last forever.

That's what I don't get. More than half of this stuff is common elements or components. Why are pilots forced to pick up debris?

If they made the components purchasable, it would still be a very badly designed implementation of content (it would equate to buying tokens to slide in a slot machine) but it would at least remove the tedium. And that is really what is killing me. Just how horribly tedious it is.

Plus, gives something to do with all that piled up cash.

+1 OP. I was looking forward to modding my ship, testing out new builds, finding what works for me :) As it stands the grind is so endless, so tedious, and so RANDOM, that I will most likely just get an FSD range enhancement for my most used ships (to lessen the honk-jumping tedium) and leave it at that. And therefore not experience 99% of the new content. Thanks FDev!

Seriously, whoever came up with this system should be demoted to bugfixing duties and kept well away from any game design...

I like being forced to get into an SRV and look for something. I've hardly used mine, and it makes things interesting, doing something different.

I've also never before (2.1) been mining, so again, that gets me doing something different.

Imho, FD have the right idea with the materials, especially with the dispersion. Just don't like the RND chance to have been wasting my time.

I got this.
The diferance I can get credits witch ever way I like, as apposed to some meterials.

Try out things I normally don't do???
I played this game from beta, the thing I normally don't do... I don't do becouse I don't particularly like doing them!
Forcing me to do so won't help change that.
Encouraging yes.... forcing no.

I like the idea of Engineers and I don't particularly mind the RNG as it will provide an element of uniqueness.

However I do agree that more mats storage and now module storage are needed and the materials in general even need to either be n more abundance or there is an in game method to find them easier using scanners etc to narrow a search area. I'm a pretty patient person but I have only so much time to allocate to this game (there are others as well as boring life stuff).

So at the moment I've gone on a mini exploration to help unlocking with farseer and will just see what mats I pickup along the way. Hoping for some FD tweaking before I get back.

Loving the harder AI as well. Edit: And the missions!

I will say though that I PvE not PvP and iI imagine that has a bearing on the urgency to get the best mods.
