So, this is where the money is.... Exploring

Now before anyone tell me that there is many things to do in this game, like PP (which is the only aspect of the game i havent tried yet), bounty hunting, mining, transport and so on. The money is minuscule compared to taking a group of tourists in the black, scanning everything, coming back and cashing in. I have seen many online exploits like Quince, and other systems which you can stack missions, but there is nothing like good ol fashion exploring. I spent a week out in the black 7mil credit tourist mission 7kly out, and i came back and cashed in with a grand total of about 40million credits. And thats with me honking every system, and only detail scanning planets that looked interesting. Then i got credit with discovering about 50-100 new planets (about 10-15 elw and wws, and a handful of ammonia worlds) . Im just imagining the money i left on the table if i had scanned everything in every system.

Is this the meat of the game? The randomly generated systems? Scanning them, reporting them, and having your name attached to them? I have been playing this game for the past 7 months, and exploring was the one occupation i avoided because i knew it could be tedious and boring. But the financial reward is huge. I was telling my wife who watched me from time to time getting back to the bubble, explaining to her that hopping from system to system isnt the only part of the game. But this is the mission i chose so im just grinding back to the station to cash in. I also told her that this better pay off well or its the last time im exploring.

And yes, its currently about the money with me. Playing this game, for me to upgrade ships, requires that. I had just made enough to buy the FDL, but i still didnt buy it because it cost twice the amount for the upgrades i want and rebuy cost (and trading in my vulture would have only save me 11mil). But i know if i want a new ship, just go out in the black for about a week, and come back and cash in. Very lonely tho..

Im going back out in the black, later this week. Because i need more money for my FDL, i didnt purchase yet. But i did cop the python. Traded in my FDS for it. So im gonna do a few planetside missions and see how it flies.
Then back in my asp explorer and go about 4kly out and start scanning again...... And this time no passengers, just my srv. I can go at my own pace. Well, maybe a 4kly tourist site.

I'm not sure if passenger missions combined with exploration scan payouts are the most profitable activity in the game, but they certainly pay out well. However, ever since launch and all the way to 2.3, exploration was for most of the time the worst-paying activity in the game. So no, it never was the meat of the game in the sense that people would want to grind credits that way - the opposite of it, actually.

That said, if you scanned all the valuables (ELW, WW, AW), you've received the most of your possible payout. Outside of the terraforming candidates, other bodies don't pay even a tenth. See this image for some references. (There was a chart with more accurate values, but it seems it was removed from the image hosting site.)

hmm. whats funny is that i only see missions that only payout like 100k, -500l, unless its surface scan missions which can hover around 1-2 mil. Thats if im allied with the system faction. But the most consistent good pay was passenger or transport missions. Until i decided to go out into the black. Now im glad you confirmed what i was thinking, no need to surface scan everything, only potential ELWs, or basically anything with an atmosphere and clouds. ELWs and WWs are usually easy to identify from the system map. Ammonia worlds can be a lil tricky to identify.

IMO the payout of passenger missions is the highest of the regular 'jobs' right now. Short missions, approximately 300LY of travel can yield 5 millions or more and can be completed in 20 minutes with a long jump capable ship. In most cases the highly demanding passengers didn't even demand anything additional, it was over before they could feel the need for a ton of clothes... I did them one by one in an AspX but I'm sure stacking can yield even more.

Sure travelling to SagA can bring 80 million with the mission alone and three times as much with some exploration but IMO the time consumption far exceeds shorter passenger missions.

Right now I'm off into the black with no passengers, I don't like the time and damage pressure they bring. I want to take the time to see the previously unseen sights.

I took a long range sight-seeing mission only once to try it. It was around 5 Kylies and it became a "job". I decided passengers are not for me and went to my usual randomly chosen exploration trips. I don't care about money but it is good that at the end of any exploration trip the amount of money is proportional to the amount of scanning one does. Feels well balanced. But as others have said I'm there for my own personal pleasure and I go where it takes my fancy.

The best credits/hour rate in that regard is, as far as I can tell, in bubble passenger missions - either one-way VIP transport or 2-4 stop sight-seeing - for allied minor factions. Best payout I ever had were ~50 MCr in one hour, 20-30 MCr is not difficult.

Did Jacques and back. Took a long time plotting in increments of 1,000. That was a lot of tedious map-loading.

Not a good experience for me. Exploration needs improvement. It was a poor "time for cash" payout ratio in my opinion.

Excellent "time for moments of wonder" ratio though.

To the OP, I am sorry it wasn't for you. You have done well though, don't regret your decision.

If you are exploring to get rich then you'll get disappointed real quick. It's already been said but it's all about the discovery element which is not everyone's cup of Earl Grey. The payouts are a nice little bonus to be honest. If I want to make real money I mine or trade or both. Which to be honest is very very dull.

Since when can we make a decent living by selling exploration data ?
Nahhh.... Come on, I know you're joking, right ? :D

since AFTER I got to elite exploration..........naturally , (small white lie..i got my final few 5%ages doing the first passenger missions)

While I don't recommend it as a fun activity.

Scanning all the ELW around the bubble listed on one of the various 3rd party sites can be very lucrative. Particularly good for getting allied with minor factions as well.

Quince stacking planetary scan jobs or stacking massacre missions in warring systems is far more lucrative per unit time I would have thought. Even with the new limits 20-30 million per hour is fairly easy to achieve.

I am totally agreeing here. I love Exploration, it may seem similar, but driving a SRV on a planet no one has set foot on or will afterwards is kinda special (to my simple mind). Of course, I don´t deny the cash you get from scanning them all! :)

Honestly, i cant say it wasnt for me. But It became tedious and repetitive on the way back. Especially not knowing what my payout was. Kinda like a long road trip. Very fun on the way there, but a chore back. I used that money to buy a python and fully kit it. I dont know how many lyrs i can squeeze out if it. Im at an engineers station now. Going to modify the jump range on this ship. If it cant get me around 25ly then ill toy around with it for a week, and hop back in my aspX and hit the black again.

To my mind that's too monetary reward focussed to really be any fun at all, I'll spend weeks skipping around nebulae and such and won't even know what my reward is until that rare occasion I end up in an inhabited system. I am so unmmonetary reward focussed I hardly ever bother with ELW's unless they happen to be in my way. I am currently on the second week of what is going to be some fairly extended research, my expected reward? 0, anything above that is bonus on top of the interest and enjoyment. I think once people start focussing on the monetary reward above all else that's when exploring gets tedious.

Set yourself a target you will enjoy doing, do it, the money is a bonus.
