So what are your colonization goals and plans?

My findings so far early on:

1. If you don't like hauling, you'll better change that attitude if you want to engage in this content
2. Based on my admittedly brief experience, all the nice systems (landable atmos, rings, etc) have already been grabbed by someone else so it will require expansion of the bubble to get the next best opportunity (I looked for half an hour so maybe that wasn't enough, as I didn't want to haul stuff to the right edge of the bubble as I have no FC)
3. Once you've built your stations and installations, your system will ultimately look like hundreds if not thousands of others. Though I can see the appeal for BGS anoraks
4. The only distinguishing factor seems to be naming stuff, which comes at a pretty hefty price as in get your wallet out
5. I can't see fdev reducing commodity requirements by all that much. It's doable assuming you want to build your one little home system. Even building out a system with dozens of objects requires an insane time investment of just... Hauling a lot.
I can add a little perspective to that as well.
1. I love hauling, and I still am not enjoying this content. Everything loveable about hauling has been removed.
2. I have a carrier, and used it, and wasted time, as freight loaded onto the FC is freight hauled twice. Everyone who is colonizing is colonizing somewhere different, and every colony is within 15LY of an existing station, so there are commodity sources within reasonable jump range of most colonies. It's usually going to be faster to just source as close as you can to the colony and haul straight to the colony ship. UNLESS:
  • you don't have a freighter with an SCO drive (I would recommend fully outfitting a freighter before initializing a colony) OR
  • your colony ship ends up at a point past your SCO fuel capacity (I recommend choosing a system with only a single star as the game is prone to sending the colony ship to a point around the furthest star). My colony ship is about 78kls from the arrival point, which I can just get to in my cutter with the FSD in overdrive most of the way. If it were over 100K out, I would be better off using my carrier, as I wouldn't be able to reach it in overdrive. NOTE One way to force the primary port close to the arrival point would be to colonize a system with asteroid belts near the arrival star and no other asteroids/rings anywhere, and then select an asteroid base. Otherwise, anything goes.
4. The draw for me is potential passive income to help balance the passive loss from carrier maintenance, though I have serious doubts at this point whether I will care to develop the system enough to earn anything. (I also thought it would let me put a large landing pad at a place where there isn't one and I want one, although since that has turned out to be 78kls deep, and I will have to endure a lot more grinding to build one closer, that was basically a flop).

Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe an update is coming, and that part will start making sense.
I truly admire your positivity, but I can't feel it.
✅ What the System Colonisation Beta is
  • Feature complete

❌ What the System Colonisation Beta is not
  • A work in progress

  • We are happy with the System Colonisation feature itself and ... this Beta is aimed firmly at resource balancing and not changes to the feature itself.

Feature Complete is entirely compatible with future changes to support explorers. For example, the feature that discriminates between Bubble and Colonia ports already exists, is being used, and can have the settings adjusted at some point in the future; it doesn't require a new feature to do that, the capability is already built in and in use.

Likewise they've said that expansion range is something they want to test in the beta and might fine-tune; no new feature is needed to make those changes, the capability is already built in. (I think 15LY is about right, but my point is that many changes don't require any new features, the system is already full of features that can be used as FDev sees fit)

All sound points. I would just rather be cynical and pleasantly surprised than hopeful and disappointed (having thoroughly tested both strategies within the context of the game). I still have a pet FTD system bookmarked "Colonization Candidate," and I haven't deleted it yet. Might go ahead and rename it, though...

ETA: Then again, I suppose if FDEV determined the material balance based on a beta test limited to the edge of the bubble and then opened the feature up to more remote systems with the same material requirements and deadline, that would fit into my cynical expectations just fine.

I've got a system that's got decent space to expand, hoping to build a solid high tech/agricultural system out of it. If I get lucky, my old mining spot will have its claim revoked in 3 weeks as the guy who's doing it hasn't put any progress into the starport there yet - if that happens, I'll turn that into an extraction/refinery system as well

Fill my system with everything I will need for colonizing the next that I want within 500 ly radius of it. I put it on top most of currently available on the bubble
3 belts 2 metal 1 ice and 9 planets of varying quality

Actually thank you for pointing out those FDev quotes... I read them at the time but didn't process them thoroughly in my head. Yeah, this is it. Numbers might change downwards a little, but it essentially says "here's your new toy enjoy kthxbai".

Bit of a shame really as the principle is generally sound, it's just (as per usual) the delivery that's the problem. If more activities were involved in Colonisation (fighting off pirates, explicit mining requirements, for planetary bases some Odyssey on-foot ground prospecting, etc.) I could imagine sticking with it. The sole focus on high volume hauling just puts me off investing more time into it.

From the company's perspective I imagine though they have achieved their goal of at least temporarily boosting player numbers for their quarterly KPIs.

edited for grammar

I am also a part of the 'wait and see' fraction. I don't like hauling and enjoy the game too much to create a grind of it. Maybe I am going to claim a small backwater system next year when all has settled and the bugs have been ironed out. One outpost and perhaps a planetary station with a large pad but nothing which attracts too many visitors :)

Soon out in the black to explore until the end of the 3311 because there's no content on the horizon which adds up to my play style.

Goals: finish my 2nd spaceport (estimated 2 more weeks of flying back and forth) and then relax and slowly figure out how to fill up every possible building-spot in those 2 systems. (I have 1 small system with an outpost that is used for experimenting, and 1 bigger system with a big spaceport on the way that I try to get perfected).
And I don't have a problem with transporting goods in bulk. My Elite V rank in trading is kinda proof of that.

what i want is still not possible as i want a system which is all my own, with an ELW, 1st discovered, 1st scanned, 1st footfall and all the life found by me and then colonised.

i have such a system but its 3000ly out in the black.

in the mean time i would like to find 1 nice system with a good selection of different planet types and rings and fill it out.. i only want one in the bubble as i will never be fully happy not having the 1st discovered tag on it but i want the best one i can get and make it a great hub.
