I can add a little perspective to that as well.My findings so far early on:
1. If you don't like hauling, you'll better change that attitude if you want to engage in this content
2. Based on my admittedly brief experience, all the nice systems (landable atmos, rings, etc) have already been grabbed by someone else so it will require expansion of the bubble to get the next best opportunity (I looked for half an hour so maybe that wasn't enough, as I didn't want to haul stuff to the right edge of the bubble as I have no FC)
3. Once you've built your stations and installations, your system will ultimately look like hundreds if not thousands of others. Though I can see the appeal for BGS anoraks
4. The only distinguishing factor seems to be naming stuff, which comes at a pretty hefty price as in get your wallet out
5. I can't see fdev reducing commodity requirements by all that much. It's doable assuming you want to build your one little home system. Even building out a system with dozens of objects requires an insane time investment of just... Hauling a lot.
1. I love hauling, and I still am not enjoying this content. Everything loveable about hauling has been removed.
2. I have a carrier, and used it, and wasted time, as freight loaded onto the FC is freight hauled twice. Everyone who is colonizing is colonizing somewhere different, and every colony is within 15LY of an existing station, so there are commodity sources within reasonable jump range of most colonies. It's usually going to be faster to just source as close as you can to the colony and haul straight to the colony ship. UNLESS:
- you don't have a freighter with an SCO drive (I would recommend fully outfitting a freighter before initializing a colony) OR
- your colony ship ends up at a point past your SCO fuel capacity (I recommend choosing a system with only a single star as the game is prone to sending the colony ship to a point around the furthest star). My colony ship is about 78kls from the arrival point, which I can just get to in my cutter with the FSD in overdrive most of the way. If it were over 100K out, I would be better off using my carrier, as I wouldn't be able to reach it in overdrive. NOTE One way to force the primary port close to the arrival point would be to colonize a system with asteroid belts near the arrival star and no other asteroids/rings anywhere, and then select an asteroid base. Otherwise, anything goes.
