So... what if we could name planets?

No, not a good idea. There'd be a ridiculous amount of silly names on planets or you'd see the same pilot's name on every planet.
I'm also not a fan of them naming planets after some player that has passed away, but that seems to be a thing too of late (not a pun).

it would be cool but probably best not to let the general public decide on any names as there will always be planety mcplanetface or something equally silly somewhere in the galaxy

Probably not a great idea, because then you'd find the planet named ButtsButtsButts.
