Engineers So... what you're telling me...

I'm a little late to jumping on the engineering train.

I'm looking into thruster upgrades, and what you're telling me is that I have to refit my FDL with cargo racks, haul my Fer De Lance out to Maia to buy a unique commodity, then haul my FDL (with full cargo) back to the bubble so I can roll the dice to see if I actually get a thruster upgrade? And if not, I have to go do it again?

.....

Have you ever tried to fly an FdL 400ly before? Let alone turn around and do it again laden with cargo? Are you insane? Do you think I'm insane?

Someone please call me stupid and tell me there's something else I can do to avoid that absolute ridiculousness.

-K

OR.......you could buy a cargo rack for the FdL and park it close to Deciat, preferable a High Tech sys. Buy a Hauler, fit it for max. jump range, pop out to Maia buy the Alloy and jump back. Just an idea. ;)

I can't transfer cargo between ships though. Don't I need the alloy to roll for the thruster upgrade? or is it just materials?

Well, me personally, I'd fit out your fdl for cargo leave it near the engineers planet. Then get in an ASPX and fly that out to get exactly enough of the item you need to fill the fdl (or how much you need, whichever comes first). Fly it back, then swap ships and get the engineers mod...

Ninja'd! Lol

No, the alloy unlocks the engineer. Other materials are needed, and sometimes commodities. You'll need to fit a cargo bay in your FDL so you can transfer between ships without losing cargo, though. But you won't have to go back to Maia.

You'll probably need a more multipurpose ship to do Engineer activities and gather materials.

I think you can transfer cargo between ships now. (I read that, but haven't tried it. I believe that is the case, though.)

As to the rest of it - no, you aren't insane. Nor is your opinion of the process involved.

It was introduced with 2.1 the ship you are swapping into has to have enough space for the cargo in your old ship though.

Dammit, ninja'd twice in the same thread! Lol

Ok, so cargo transferring between ships was added with engineers?
Yes it was, you can even get the FSD on lets say your asp, then sell it in the same station as your fdl and buy it back. Obviously you need the same FSD level as your FDL, but I think they match with the ASP.

@OP - Engineers just barely came out, relatively speaking, so you're still early to the party. You are not stupid, and you are not yet to the even inconveniences stage yet.

let's say you don't mind fitting FDL or other non trade ship with cargo racks. Let's say you don't mind or take great joy in traveling all across the bubble in short range jumps. Let's also say you just love the RNG system and think trolling dice is fantastic.

all that aside, now let's start talking about what happens to your FDL with cargo racks after a bit of time playing 2.1
A) you start picking up engineer mod required commodities - you have X cargo of those but can't switch into any ship with smaller cargo space than what you are carrying around

you Google, read Inara and other 3rd party sites, you brutally reduce down the list of commodities you decide to keep and carry around.
-the relative few you can buy at specific markets, you flush
-the commodities for upgrades you haven't unlocked or level unlocked yet, you flush. Sure, you'll miss not having them when you get the unlock, but screw it - gotta reduce this huge list somehow
-the commodities for stuff you don't normally use a lot, like say you are usually pulse laser guy, don't use cannons - so screw it, even if this commodity is semi rare to get in missions, toss it. Will only store on my ship the commodities that go to upgrades I always equip on my ships as standard, not optional switch out gear

you sit back thinking you made a good dent in the list of possible crap you need to shopping cart around like a hobo...then read the entire giganto remainder of your 'must have' upgrades and realize .....I need bigger cargo racks and more capacity. Bye bye FDL, hello [insert your preference of multipurpose ship with bigger cargo]

b) you play around with your new multipurpose ship awhile, then realize there is no going back. Either eject all or almost all cargo, or never be able to swap ships back to ships with no / low cargo

you're not stupid. The designer(s) who thought up and ok'd this steaming pile of garbage consequence (not the update itself - lots of fun, good stuff in it - just saying this specific consequence is a steaming pile) are the ones that are stupid.

To be honest, I don't really want to do it. Is it even worth it?

I can't say if it's worth it to you, but it certainly isn't to me.

First, I'll quote my own thread started earlier today:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=261556

I spent a couple nights just unlocking the Engineer invitation, and now that I know what is possible (not probable, merely possible) with this Engineer - and what it requires from me - I'm done with this mess. Next time I log in, I'm going back to my home system... and the Engineer can keep their mods.

I made that exact jouney- in my FDL, just like what you're dreading.

I scanned every single thing on the way to and fro, and sold the scans to Farseer. Now she ruvs me.

Sometimes it's the journey as much as the destination, my friend.

One more tip - choose ship which has/can use same module size to ship you want to upgrade, upgrade module there and then transfer it to target ship.
With T5 dirty drive tuning being available only in maia i just travelled there with my tradeconda, got thrusters upgraded, returned and trensferred them to my corvette. Did not want to fly to maia with 11Ly range.
In case of FDL it will be Asp - it has the same thruster size and good jump range...

How does one transfer a module?
