General / Off-Topic so what's a whiteknight?

Slightly off topic but what does constitute a White Knight on these forums? From my experience all it takes to be labelled one is to disagree, not support or correct someone having a rant. That's how I got labelled (and still proud of it, hence my avatar )

can only speak for me, but it's when valid criticism is dismissed in an unreasonable way. of course this describes opinions, not people, but posters that do that systematically end appearing themselves as white knights. extreme cases of whiteknightism not only deny criticism but are unable to even tolerate it, thus feel compelled to supress it. it is common for them to flock together to reinforce each other and use common trolling and mobbing tactics to owerwhelm the opinion, dreail the thread and ideally get it closed. it is also common to repeat untrue statements or facts in order to have them picked up by less informed readers and promote them to truths.

they key factor here is 'unreasonable'. ymmv, but here are some common traits:

1. lack of knowledge in specific domains (networking, game development, game industry)
2. unmerited or exagerated acclaim to frontier (usually based on #1) pretending it magically compensates the issue
3. plain irrational or selfish arguments

some example silly typical arguments:

in response to complaints about bugs or bug management in general
- do you know how difficult it is to build a game at this scale (with scale not bearing any meaning in this context)
- the game is complex (yeah and roses are red, but it's still commercial software)
- they patch bugs constantly (plain denial)

in response to criticism of p2p or networking support in general
- p2p is best suited for a game like elite (sheer nonsense)

in response to steam stats
- steam stats are unrepresentative|unreliable|untrustworthy (simply not true)
- oh another doomsayer! (even if op has not implied anything of the sort)

the sad irony of whiteknights is that senseless fighting of criticism of the game works actually against the game they seem to love so much, and in extreme instances is responsible or cause of much of the 'toxicity' they often loathe and wrongly blame the criticism for.

frontier plz fix!

Anyone who doesn't jump enthusiastically on the latest fashionable whinge for whatever reason gets labelled a white knight.

EDIT : and the latest fashionable whinge seems to be "GAH WHITEKNIGHTS".

Nice write up OP though you may be hard pressed to find them defending themselves in here the way you described them [big grin]

Guess I touced a nerve or two, kinda flattered actually :D

So under the OP's guidelines, a White Knight is anyone who disagrees with him, doesn't matter if it is right or wrong, just disagrees with him. Yep, guess I am a White Knight then :D

I remember at the school, the white knights were always in the front row in the classroom

:)

Oh, oh .. that's me then!

What is the point of this?
Fond of sticking labels on people?

I never use labels like that (white knight, hater, etc.).
They serve no purpose whatsoever.

A handy label for dismissing points of view without actually having to address them.

Note: this applies to all the unhelpful labels that are used to dismiss opinions without necessarily having any reason to do so.

This!

I think it's a term used in a derogatory fashion, often by those who've lost all faith in the game, when someone like myself tries to point out that, despite it's flaws, the game is still fundamentally awesome. It's a way of dismissing this opinion by saying "well you would say that wouldn't you". The thing is that negative opinions tend to spread like an infectious disease. I've felt it myself, read too much negative press and it's easy to really start to believe in it. But the game is amazing and we musn't lose sight of this fact either. I'm not denying there are things wrong with the game, rootsrat has an excellent thread where he highlights MANY little things that break immersion for instance, and most if not all of them I totally agree with. But I don't tend to showcase the negatives on my Best of Forum thread (come on, who honestly wants to read that?) It's not like we don't know about the negatives but why focus on them? To bring them to FD's attention? You seriously think FD don't know about the stuff that doesn't work as well as they'd like? Of course they do. So yeah, perhaps I am a White Knight. Was Gandalf a White Night because he believed in hope? Well if so then guilty as charged and proud of it.

Somehow, I don't think the OP is getting the replies (or support) he expects, such a shame too ….. lol
