With Engineers and horizons we can basically tune our ships how we want. I am surprised no one has ever tried to organise races and such. I did some research and fooling around with builds, and I started writing some sort of regulations I will use with my friends and my Clan/Group. I'll leave it here for anyone interested in replicating this or helping me with suggestions and such. Fly safe!
Elite Dangerous Racing
General Rules
1. A Racing team is composed of two Racing ship of the same model and dedicated pit crew.
1a. The two racing ship may have different outfitting and engineering at the discretion of the racing team.
1b. A third racer is allowed in Endurance races, Tag races or Speed Races.
2. No weapon type is allowed before or during the race from either Pilot or his/hers pit crew. If any attempt to deploy or use hardpoints will result in immediate disqualification of the offending racing team.
2a. Pit Crew ships are however allowed to fit Shields if they so desire, if their minimum refueling tonnage is within the minimum tonnage required.
3. Shield generator modules and Shield Cell Banks usage is banned throughout the race. If present in a ship’s loadout, they must be disabled prior the beginning of the race.
4. Utility Mounts are forbidden throughout the race and must be disabled if fitted onto Race Ship or Pit Crew Ship. Impairing other pilot’s vision with chaff launchers, scooping fuel off of stars or interdicting other racers with the intent of slowing them down during interplanetary racing section is considered illegal and punished with immediate disqualification of the offender.
4a. Every Pilot must undergo at least one Pit stop. Failing to do so will result in a time penalty.
4b. Speed is limited to 100 m/s when approaching, transiting and exiting Pit Lane
4c. Overtakes are forbidden inside pit lane. Any attempt to gain a position over another contestant will be punished with a speed penalty consisting of 80 m/s for five seconds.
4d. The maximum number of Pit Crew member is 5, but only 2 may work on a Pilot’s ship at any given time.
4e. Invading another Racer’s pit space is forbidden. The Pit stop may begin when the Racer’s ship is inside its designated pit space and with its throttle at 0 m/s.
4f. Every pilot must engage the landing gear while transiting Pit Lane. This is to prevent the accidental use of the boost and prevent crashes.
4g. Refueling must be done through Pit Crew’s fuel transfer limpets only.
5. The maximum number of Pit stops can be decided at the discretion of each contestant.
6. Ramming is strictly forbidden. Ramming another Pilot or Pit Crew member will result in time penalties or disqualification depending on the situation at hand.
6a. Any maneuver that may risk ship damage or destruction is forbidden.
6b. Altering the track, cutting corners and engaging into any kind of maneuver that may give an unfair advantage will be punished with speed restrictions or time penalties.
7. Pit Crew Ships must be composed only by Adder ships.
7a. Minimum Refuel tonnage is 16T.
8. Race Ships will be assigned a personal ID. This ID will be used to sign up and compete in the racing circuit.
8a. The ID may not be changed.
8b. The ID may not be swapped between ships.
8c. The ID May not be modified in a way that infringes regulation.
8d. The ID will be assigned as follows. [Race Category]-[Racer Number]-[Race team tag]
Eg. FX-xxx-XXX (x being any number from 0 to 9, X being any letter)
9. Every team is responsible of every entry fee, expenses, rebuy they may have to pay.
9a. Entry fee and prices will be payed in the form of Gold.
9b. A racing team may be asked to refund another team’s losses if they have been the primary cause of said loss such as ship destruction.
10. Every team must undergo scans and legal checks from the jury at any given time.
10a. A team may refuse a scan and accept the possibility of being penalized for such action.
10b. It’s forbidden to scan other team’s ship without the jury’s or interested team’s permission.
11. Boost feature can be used only in the straight sections of the track or in otherwise specified areas.
11a. Boost may only be used to overtake a ship or to defend a position. It cannot be used to fly at higher speed. (Think of it like an F1 DRS)
12. Flight assist may be disabled or enabled any time the Pilot desires.
12a. Flight assist must however be active during asteroid sections.
13. Frame Shift Drive must be enabled in supercruise acceleration sections of the track and disabled in the deceleration section.
13a. Power Distributors must be disabled during FSD Boot, charge and use.
13b. Boosting is forbidden during FSD usage in acceleration and deceleration sections.
Racing Categories
All ships have been divided into different classes based on their mass and capabilities. Every racing team may have different pilots for different categories.
Formula Light
Every ship that weights from 0T to 69T falls into the Light category. Race category ID is FL. These ships must follow standard ship and race regulations. Formula Light can compete in Speed, Tag and Touring Races.
Formula Medium
Every ship from 70T to 199T falls into the medium category. Race category ID is FM. These ships must follow standard ship and race regulations. Formula Medium can compete in Speed, Tag, Touring and Endurance Races.
Formula Heavy
Every ship from 200T to 309T falls into the heavy category. Race category ID is FH. These ships must follow standard ship and race regulations. Formula heavy can compete in Tag, Touring and Endurance Races
Formula Exotics
Every ship over 310T falls into exotic category. Race category ID is EX. These ships must follow standard race regulations. Power plant size, fuel tank size are double the standard regulations. The distributor used must be 4D class. Formula Exotic can compete in Endurance and Touring Races.
Ship Regulations
1. Fuel tank size must be 1C
2. Power plant size must be 2D
3. Hull must be reinforced with a R5 Heavy Duty.
4. Frame shift must be turned off until the designated area to use them has been reached. Cargo hatch must be disabled as well.
Race types and Regulations
Speed Races will be held in oval, elliptical, 8 shaped tracks of various lengths (max 50km) exstended in a portion of space near space stations, nav beacons, outposts or other structures. Every race must have within 50 to 200 laps depending on track length or organizer details. No Supercruise or Orbital/planetary sections. There must be at least two Boost sections. The track cannot intercept planetary rings of any kind nor any sort of obstructive obstacle. The pit lane must be near a station or outpost to facilitate Pit Crew’s refueling and Pit stop prepping. Up to three racers per team are allowed. Each of the Pilots must complete 100% of the laps.
Endurance Races will take place within a system. The track may include orbital or planetary sections, Supercruise sections, as well as intercepting asteroid belts or planetary rings. The minimum number of laps is 400 to 1000. There must be at least five boost sections present in the entire track and two pit lanes near two checkpoint stations. There must be at least one Supercruise acceleration and deceleration zone.
Touring Races will take place on a closed circuit of various length (max 100km). Every race must have within 100 and 300 laps. There must be three boost sections, one pit lane, one checkpoint station or outpost. It may include orbital flight, asteroid sections or planetary sections.
Tag Races will follow aforementioned regulations depending on the type of track or lap count. Three Pilots are required for this race type and each of them must complete 1/3 of the total laps. There must be a designated tag zone usually positioned on the starting straight where two racers will tag eachother. The departing ship will depart as soon as the arriving ship’s throttle hits 0 m/s.
