So Yeah... 3D in Elite

Last night I pulled out my Red/Blue 3D Glasses, nice ones not those paper ones from comic books and put Elite into 3D Mode. I must say that I was quite impressed! Everything looked nice.

To be honest though, it kind of messes up some of the beauty of Elite as it must alter the colors to accommodate Red/Blue filters.

Also, I felt like my eyes "worked harder"... like they felt tired pretty fast. Might be just that I was tired from work though.

Anyways wanted to say, break out your old 3D Glasses and have some fun!

As soon as I got the beta and figured out that stereoscopic 3D was in the game I got on e-bay and ordered a pair of 3d glasses. They are dirt cheap on there and nice ones too. Colors aside the effect is subtle but definitely there. Menus seem to pop more but when you look around the cabin you definitely see you're in a 3d environment especially the keyboards, control, and chairs (in a cobra). Totally amps up the perspective.

I hope the feature is fully refined at launch becaue it is very promising for those who don't have an advanced setup like Oculus etc.

My only gripe is that currently I can only stand about 15 minutes of it or so.

I find that my eyes work harder with all 3D including shutter ones.

I think its cos I'm looking harder, trying to see inside the picture, round corners and focusing on closer and further away stuff.

I notice Amazon sell 3D Active and Passive type glasses. Will the Active ones work? They dont look coloured.

I tried last night with a pair I got when I went ot watch something in 3D at the cinema. Thge lenses didnt appear to be red / blue...more clear to me, and I didnt notice any difference in the Top Shift YouTube video I was watching.

Dont want to get the wrong ones, even if they are cheap.

The cinema (passive) ones work by polarising each lens in the opposite direction, then playing alternate frames with alternate polarisation, so each eye sees alternate images.

The active ones do something similar, but instead of changing polarity of the light being output by the television, they alternately make the lens of each eye opaque so that light cannot pass. They are 'active' because they are synchronised precisely with the refresh rate of the television to ensure that each eye sees the correct frame.

If you don't have a 3D monitor / TV, then what you need is a pair of standard red-cyan anaglyph 3D glasses. This gives an inferior effect to polarised 3D but have the advantage that you don't need special equipment other than the glasses.

I tried these out at Fantsticon.

They are good and give a good 3D image, but in the combat scenarios (all we could play at the convention) the scanner frequently only displayed the enemy ships position in just one colour (red).

This resulted in the enemy ship just vanishing from the radar in the middle of a fight :(

I did not manage to kill a single ship, because half the time I had no clue where it was until it shot me again.

Where can I find some screenshots of Elite - Dangerous in 3D, specifically for those red/blue comic glasses.

I found a nice little trick with those glasses. As users know, after a prolonged usage, they affect your vision. But I have found, that reversing the glasses and peering through them for half a minute corrects your vision. I used to create 3D images years ago as they where easy to create and found it worked for me.

In Top Shift 15 I did a 3D section, it's about 27 minutes in. I had some old red/green glasses I got free with Monsters vs Aliens.

Seem to work quite well but those glasses hurt my eyes after a little while.

I ordered a pair of red blue glasses from a product on Amazon uk that will ship for free even to Czech republic, so the total price is just 0.88 GBP.

Remarkable that they can make these and ship them so cheap.

Yeah those the ones I use. Its funny though, when I played Track Nation in red/blue mode I could play for hours without getting a headache. But in Elite I can't take 15 minutes. I wonder if need to adjust the separation.

I had no idea this was even in the game until a viewer in my stream started asking about it! Lo and behold I navigated through the graphics options and found 3D (Experimental).

So what's the deal? Do I just get myself some funky red / blue glasses, flick the settings on and enjoy Elite in 3D? I've only got a standard monitor so didn't think I'd be able to play with these settings...

I didn't notice the 3D rig at Fantasticon... Between the DK2 and he cosplay girls I might have been a little distracted! ;)

No special equipment other than the Cheesy Red/Blue 3D glasses. No other equipment. And btw, you can still watch the cosplay girls while playing if you have a second monitor :)

You don't need a special monitor, the game prints two aspects of the game on the screen at once.

I think you lose a bit of fidelity, but you get the 3D effect, so it is not obvious.

Just looked at some of the photos of Fantasticon (gutted I couldnt go) and some of the cosplay girls looked incredible.

Personally, I didn't like anaglyph - it didn't really work for me and the colours aren't right.

I loved, loved, loved oculus rift though. It's not perfect - the resolution even on DK2 is t quite there, but the tracking and 3D combined were mind blowing.

If you want the oculas rift on the cheep, the only thing to recommend is the 3d glasses and the ED head tracker. It would be a bit fiddly but it's a stop gap until the Consumer Oculas Rift comes along.

Already got the EDTracker and the glasses have just been ordered from Amazon. Combine those with me using Voice Attack and this will be the final straw for my wife and kids to conclude that I am sadly a complete [gaming addict].

How would using these anaglyph glasses work on a standard monitor though? Wouldn't your display colors, particularly red/blue, need to be pretty much exactly calibrated to whatever the glasses are to have any effect?
