So Yeah... 3D in Elite

How would using these anaglyph glasses work on a standard monitor though? Wouldn't your display colors, particularly red/blue, need to be pretty much exactly calibrated to whatever the glasses are to have any effect?

The same way they do it in comics. Bot images on the same screen, One color being filtered out on one eye and the other well... on the other eye.

Don't worry about brand name glasses. Just get something that feels good. Not those paper ones. The technology for the glasses is nothing to be concerned with.

I have a pair already but I would imagine if the color calibration is even a little bit off on your monitor then you would get a whole lot of nothing

Nah... its fine. You might need to adjust it. I believe you can in the menu. I am pretty close to the monitor cause of my old eyes and get a headache from it real quick.

Personally, I didn't like anaglyph - it didn't really work for me and the colours aren't right.

I loved, loved, loved oculus rift though. It's not perfect - the resolution even on DK2 is t quite there, but the tracking and 3D combined were mind blowing.

I've played around with the anaglyph and it does show the potential for 3D but its more of a novelty than a realistic way to play. It was cool though and I can imagine playing with a real 3D monitor or telly would be great.

Still haven't tried a Rift but its something I'm quite excited about seeing.

So I found my old Anaglyph glasses and tried this out.

The major con is that you lose a lot of color in the scenes and it may take a while for your eyes to adjust. After you find the separation sweet spot in the slider and let yourself adjust, tt feels seriously awesome.

After a good hour of flying around I almost forgot I had these on. My eyes had adjusted to the 3D and to the different coloration. Now with my crappy anaglyph glasses I get some ghosting so I went ahead and ordered some nicer ones online that, according to reviews, have less ghosting. Your mileage may vary.

For anyone considering a Rift in the future, this is a great inexpensive way to see the potential Elite has for 3D gameplay. The devs have made some verrryyy sexy design decisions with this, such as the way the ship's HUD elements float above the dashboard and the way the targeting cursor appears in the distance while other UI elements are more closer to you. Also dat 3D galaxy map... It is all a joy to operate. And just being able to notice the glass surrounding the cockpit when light hits it at just the right angle is really immersive.

However I did notice that while all of the elements inside the cockpit are 3D, nothing beyond it is. That means any objects, ships, stations, or asteroids you approach all appear 2D because they aren't shifted in any sort of way in Anaglyph mode. For those with DKII, is this the case as well or do you really see the depth and size of some of these other objects?
