So you're an explorer are you?

Hello Commanders,

My aim with this post is to (again) try to find out what ED will be like as soon as we can get down to the damn planets.

I've tried to data mine the interweb for clues, however FD is one tight lipped "person".

So let's assume that we find something of interest to scan, ok it's a earth like world. Next step would be to get into low orbit, and do some research from there first.

1. Check atmospheric compounds
2. Maybe launch some small probes to check for life forms, with video link back to the ship.
3. Set destination landing zone and begin decent.
4. Land at destination and roll out a small rover.
5. Launch a small scout drone to scout the surroundings. (Like in Arma 3)

After we get there, what will we find?

Well, we don't know that is why we boldly go where no man has gone before right?
My question would more be like, how are FD going to get this done right? there are many ways of attacking the problem, however only very few ways of doing it right.

First, low gravity planets would give you tail thin creatures, high gravity planets would give you short creatures on stumpy legs. (very simplistic)
Second, we need dangerous creatures too, enough of the fluffy stuff.

Uhh yeah that is a big puppy, meeting one of those would be scary.

So FD, could you please give us a small hit of what you got in mind :p

Why only Earth-likes? We already have gas giants with life. We could re-read our Larry Niven books and, say, find weightless forests inside donut-shaped atmospheres round neutron stars. Silicon-based life on rocky planets with problematic (if any) atmospheres. And so on.

:D S

+rep for the lovely picture of the tardigrade.

(fear these guys. they are relentless)

Fear the Kraken if it comes from KSP. Re-entry problems much. :D

In response I remember seeing a Dev video with DB saying that planet flying and/or landings could be introduced quickly but they would simply be different coloured skyboxes, he said adding the content to be procedurally generated or otherwise added is the difficult and time consuming bit and they wanted to get it right rather than having the "seen one, seen them all" approach.

Well, when I was younger, I quite liked to imagine it like this.

The part at 55m50s is how I envision my death to come as I leave my ship to explore. Stung to death by a million toxic needles. :p

Why this great obsession with planetary landings? If i wanted an in atmosphere filght sim i'd be playing Microsoft flight simulator???
It would be nice to dock on a planet but i feel no urge to go flying through canyons etc. if you want that find another game that will do it properly rather than an add on with too much expectation of what will be possible, i bought a space simulator not Chuck Yeager's flight school...

You are free to not buy the expansion then. Don't talk down on content that doesn't concern you, but others are looking forward to. I'm not going in other threads saying they should remove Open Play if I can simply choose not to use it if I don't like it.

The same reason why people enjoy fighting in asteroid fields. You may be able do combat with additional obstacles like clouds, lightning storms affecting sensors, tornadoes on gas giants and a whole host of other things. Tell me honestly that those do not sound fun. :)

Are you kidding? Landing on an alien Earth-like World and planting a flag...THIS PLANET IS MINE!

Can't wait. I get giddy thinking about it.

Lol, as you start an inter-stellar invasion by claiming some other species planet...that's what upset the Klingons y'know heh heh.

Ha - if the planet has city lights visible from orbit (i've found 24 ELWs so far....none of them do) then I wouldn't try to claim it. However, no lights = my planet. If there are primitive bipedal life forms, I'll probably set myself up as some sort of God and have them do my bidding :)

I want to land on an ELW with no intelligent life. Have a dump and then come back after several generations to see what it has evolved into.
