Social Sanctuary

I'm sitting in the dock the other day I'm thinking... I used to sit afk in WoW quite a lot but it felt much more alive.

I then realised it was because I used to afk in busy cities and watch trade chat, players coming and going from the vendors etc.

Also what made you able to afk in a relaxed social environment was the fact that it was a massive walled and npc defended city of your faction... or like in Dalaran (neutral city) it was a sanctuary where members of all factions could come, and by ingame limitation were not able to pvp/grief people.

I was wondering if we could get our own Dalaran to sit in, hang around and socialise? (I know about CG's etc) but what about a place pretty central to the bubble like a surface outpost where there is either massive guard turrets ensuring no shenanigans, or player hardpoints are simply disabled when entering the area (more thought will need to go in to make it a safe environment)

But I would like a place to go when I'm in the mood to just chill with some fellow commanders...

This surface sanctuary settlement can be a playground of sorts, with many geographical and structural attractions, where eagles can fly around between the structures, srv's can muck about in and around the same structures etc.

at the moment every social gathering is usually very goal orientated, a cg, a treasure hunt etc, what I'm thinking about is a persistent place where the vibe is just to chill

just a place to go and muck about, show off your new ship or paintjob etc, with no actual goal in mind other than being social?
(Merope 5c was a good example recently, hanging around the barnacles there was always CMDRs coming and going chatting and riding round in their srv)

PS. I know that the CQC assets are coming to the game, but they will be many and scattered, I'm talking about one massive, central, and one of a kind settlement ("office water cooler" gathery place) of sorts :D

I like the idea of this. We could use it as an in game information hub (keeps us in game and less Alt-tabbing to forum) as well as a place to chill at the end of a hard day's flying!

if you are docked/on a pad, your ship can't take damage. justsayin^^

True, but what I was thinking is a change from being tethered to a pad and in a hangar bay where your only social interaction is the chat window, I want to see other cmdrs ships

maybe a new kind of docking pad at this station that is flush with the surface with no obstacles obstructing your view that registered you as docked, but you are still in the open to see and be seen.

docking pads could be on the outer rim looking in, sort of like a stadium so you can see the guys whizzing around in their srv's and small ships

EDIT: or or, there could be massive turrets in the area that have healing sequence beams that will heal you instantly if damage is taken, so even if someone wants to ruin the party, they can pew pew all they want, station will regen you (also with nanobots in the area fixing module and hull dmg, like a passive heal most games have in a rested zone)

Hopefully when we have space-legs and can walk around the station and go to bars - popular stations will become like that.

It will become a FPS fighting ground.

Select "return to surface". Your ship will be transferred out of the hangar without undocking. Then you can look around and enjoy the view.

I know that, and currently do that, but you are still staring at a control tower, or the bottom half of the mail slot,

and in whatever station you go to people are either trading or whatever, never replying in local etc...

this idea is for a gathering spot for people that are looking for laid back ingame social interaction. with maybe some SRV or Elite Racer type fun thrown into the mix

That would just become an other gank ground…

But it would be nice to have such a place.

If this could be done freely in open without risk, I feel it would become stale fairly quickly. Personally I like a little risk (of being ganked), I play to mitigate that risk by trying to make sure I know where the hotspots are.

There are only so many gankers, and they can't be everywhere, and it's a big galaxy. If you want to sit in a hotspot but only meet passive players you need to invite players you trust to your own group, or choose an existing PvE group I think.

That damn npc speech!!! :D

Here have pleb'rep +1 :p

Thats why I mentioned there needs to be restrictions built in, the same as the referenced "Dalaran" city, players will not be able to be ats by design, thats why I make use of the term sanctuary

but then how do you meet new people... if you are in a private group that has people that only you trust?

you are missing the point of this settlement I think,

Sadly that won't happen anytime soon. FD already mentioned that they don't have the resources to implement a PvE system in this game as too many players would try everything they can to work around any restrictions put in place, needing constant adjustments and fixes.

Well that's a community problem, you can do something about it without Frontier having to divert any resources. Just create a thread where you invite people to whatever station you want to be your meeting place.

Then they simply need to take the "MMO'" tag and statement out of their steam page and other relevant advertising.

I am talking about creating a "safe haven" and the mechanics and tools that other MMO's have

What I am referring to is at the moment ED is a lawless shtshow with no acountablility making you think twice about breaking the law, The place I am talking to can be compared to a "ULTRA HIGH SEC" area... think about a police station, you wouldnt walk in there and start shooting people? therefore making the police station a high sec safe haven

You want to meet new people, but only the ones that won't gank you? I think I covered that, you join an existing group.

If you want to do it in open (and I have), you just need to find the right place & be prepared to fight or run. Even the best run pubs get troublemakers sometimes ;)

If you look at my sig you would notice that I am in a group, let me get this straight, you are defending the game's lack of social tools and telling me to go out of the game for the interaction that a mmo is supposed to offer?

Also to add,

putting in friendly PvE stuff is too much effort, but it's ok that they dedicated a whole patch to making special weapon effects that are "Needing constant adjustments and fixes" and have effectively broken PvP?

so its ok to break pvp, but not to fix pve? thats a double negative net outcome

If your issue is crime and punishment, there are ways to fix that. However no amount of crime and punishment rework should prevent someone from shooting you and potentially killing you.
If what you want is a place where it's impossible, whether potentially or in actuality to get killed, no, god no. Danger must exist everywhere to varying degrees as soon as you undock.
If you really need a safe space then as suggested already that's what docking is for, or, with a bit less certainty, private groups.
