Social Sanctuary

If your issue is crime and punishment, there are ways to fix that. However no amount of crime and punishment rework should prevent someone from shooting you and potentially killing you.
If what you want is a place where it's impossible, whether potentially or in actuality to get killed, no, god no. Danger must exist everywhere to varying degrees as soon as you undock.
If you really need a safe space then as suggested already that's what docking is for, or, with a bit less certainty, private groups.

I am in a fairly ridiculously modded cutter, I have have had wings of 4 packing heat cancer try kill me without getting me over 100% heat or dropping 1 ring of my shields before I high wake their ganksquad, danger is not the issue here...

and the topic has veered way off course.

My suggestion was about making a safe space to chill and hang out with other strangers ingame, the rest of the galaxy can be anarchy for all I care :p

we are talking about making a space 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of 1 system in 400bil a safe spot... not changing the danger of the galaxy

Edit: and even then, the gankers can hang out at the gates and wait for you to exit this sanctuary

I can imagine it now, some dude comes zooming in with like 10% hull left and no shields... stops, repairs... and then is like... Phew, made it!... so wheres the bbq guys :D

If you look at my sig you would notice that I am in a group, let me get this straight, you are defending the game's lack of social tools and telling me to go out of the game for the interaction that a mmo is supposed to offer?

I'm sorry I'm not sure which part of your sig you are referring to?

I guess I'm saying that I think you want to have your cake and eat it. I don't want to get ganked either but I accept that there is some degree of risk anywhere, and that it's up to me to mitigate that to a level I'm comfortable with at any given time, and pay attention to my surroundings.

If I want to sit AFK & watch the world go by I don't do it with a smuggling mission on board for example, even while docked I can still be scanned.

Yesterday I sat parked near a barnacle in a silent running AspX with everything but life support & sensors shut down, and watched a few players 'interact' with it. It was pretty peaceful, but I was ready to run if I'd needed to.

Then they simply need to take the "MMO'" tag and statement out of their steam page and other relevant advertising.

You do realize that MMO just stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online" and that having a PvE or attack free zone to hang out and chill in is not a required feature to be labeled as an MMO, right?

While I as well feel that their claim of MMO is a bit dubious given certain issues, not having a safe space isn't one of those things that helps fill that bucket of second guessing.

Besides, of all the issues I noted while skimming the pages of this thread, the one I didn't see pointed out was the only one that really matters. Instancing. The more that the engine has to account for, the fewer players you get in your instance. Look at (brain fart, what was that exploration group to beagle point called?) and how they were able to stack 100+ (I think) players into an instance way out in the middle of nowhere.

If you try to do that in the bubble you'll never succeed. Having a central gathering spot won't work in this game simply because the game won't support it, regardless of weapon or crime mechanics.

It's not an mmo.

It's not a 'traditional' MMO, but it meets the basic criteria for a steam chart. I think people project their own interpretation onto the phrase, just as others (including myself) project their view of what an Elite franchise game should be like.

Would an MMO have a maximum group size of 4? Is Destiny an MMO? Is No Man's Sky an MMO? This isn't really up for interpretation.

World of Warcraft has a maximum group size (non-raid) of 5, and is arguably the biggest Western MMO in existence.

@riverside,

Danger - I'm not talking about being afraid of being ganked......... Elite Has conflict zones, why can't if have peace zones,
same as IRL, you want conflict go to the front lines of a war, you want peaceful social interaction, go to a holiday resort...

BUt it's ok Legion is out today, I'll get to have my cake and eat it there tonight when I get my dose of MMO

@deadspin,

Elite Dangerous is NOT an MMO, it barely has functioning multiplayer... Older post here, don't feel like retyping,

And again as per usual on this forum, things have derailed FROM a discussion about adding a nice little corner of the galaxy for CMDRS to hang out, have fun and chat... to an argument between people fanboying over Elite and arguing that it's fine just the way it is... My OP was just a simple suggestion, I know quite well how this game works, and how other massively successful MMO's work, I would just love to marry the successful MMO model into Elite... (Don't say EVE! :D , I like to fly my ship, not watch it fly while working through spreadsheets)

perhaps my OP was a bit naive and that the Elite Community should indeed not be given ingame tools to adequately interact as we are all either just gonna fanboy the game to death or pointlessly argue against it ingame rather than on this forum.

The underlying fact remains, we all love this game.... the difference is, some of us love the game for what it IS, others love it for what it CAN BE...

That would be fantastic, would love a place with nice structures to fly around and CMDR's chatting. When I first started playing e.d I would hang around outside stations with active CG's and met a lot of friendly cmdrs and just watched them come and go. Sadly seems like less people are playing open now but it would be really awesome for something like this to bring people back. Just somewhere to go and enjoy yourself.

You're basically asking for a feature while ignoring the following:

1: The game can't support it as it stands right now.
2: The game can't support it as it stands right now.
3: The game can't support it as it stands right now.
4: The game can't support it as it stands right now.
5: The game can't support it as it stands right now.

I never said the game was or was not an MMO. I said that to be called an MMO you don't need a little chill city to AFK in with all of your buddies. Even your linked post is a classic case of applying more to "Massively Multiplayer Online" than is actually attributed, when that term covers a wide variety of online games but doesn't specifically mean something like WoW, Aion, Guild Wars or Everquest.

This thread devolved into nothing because you went on the defensive the instant your idea was questioned.

Well, when the CQC maps get added to the game, if one or more are in good locations (perhaps near Sol or similar) they will hopefully be good places to meet other CMDR's. I don't feel like it should be a complete safety zone, but if it's a good place then when the psycho murderers arrive we should band together to save the spot. It could be really fun. Combat training area anyone? :)

I could see a new station type being added, as the central HUB for Alliance, Feds, and Empire.
A massive, MASSIVE station, like the (startrek) Federation Drydock, and a MUCH larger "no fire zone" full of the beam cannons of Doom that the stations use. Fire your weapons and you are toast. (a big enough gun might manage to take out a small ship, but they would still go down themselves). Make it have all ships and modules (save for opposing factions ships) at a decent discount, and it would naturally become a hub of activity.

Add in multiple mailslots to get inside, with no station infractions aside from the normal speeding / ramming mechanics. (so once inside you don't have to immediately dock, you can fly around inside at safe speeds)

maybe also make faction specific battleships come in and out once in awhile. (like have a capital ship dockyard asset as part of the station superstructure).

Edit: and yes, this absolutely needs to be a safe zone. Dangerous might be in the game, but a core system HUB is *not* going to let you run around shooting your weapons for kicks.

As a set piece.. this sounds great.
As someone who has gotten a good laugh out of the speed limit loophole griefing videos, I think you're delusional if you think you'd be safe. A station like that would be an electromagnet for griefers looking to mess with people coming in to check the place out.

Just imagine.. No speed limits :) ramming will be punished by harsh language.
