Sol has changed

So, I went to sol with my friend ( you know, fighters+Ariel = fun ) and I found this...

Whaaaat....
Persephone? what the hell is this? Are there any lore justification for it?

It's mentioned in the patch notes
(you have read them.....? :))

I think he means Persephone. There is no such thing as Persephone, while all the others dwarf planets are there. Persephone was long ago a fictional 9th planet, named after the wife of Pluto, but it was never found. They might as well add Nibiru to the system.

To be honest I'm a bit skepical about adding Persephone to ED, it hasn't yet been discovered IRL apart from calculations on paper, which don't get me wrong, is pretty reliable, that's how we first discovered black holes, that's how we discovered Neptune, and Pluto, etc.

First of all uppon discovery it may not even be named Persephone, its unclear if its solid, or a gas giant, nor is it clear exactly where it is right now, idk, a bit too vague for my taste

Earth is round too. Isn't it flat?

Also should just throw Nemesis out there while they are at it too.

But in all seriousness, theres been strong evidence of a 9th planet larger than the Earth orbiting at a distance. We're suppose to be locating it at some point here in the future.

Nibiru, Nemesis, Persephone, Planet X. Aren't they all just name for the same thing, a 10th planet we are getting more and more evidence for the presence of?

Using math is pretty much confirmed, yes.

To those who are not aware, Neptune was discovered the same way.

Some 'ye olde blokes looked at some math and said "huh, there should be an object here", they looked at the sky through the telescope, and there it was. Math is awesome like that.

The problem with Persephone, it has such an elongated elyptical orbit that goes out beyond solar system, don't quote me on this but I think it takes her something like 10,000 years to orbit the Sun.

That's why it hasn't yet been confirmed, we're not quite sure where to point the telescope yet.

Well Nibiru supposedly is the home of the ancient alien race that cultivated and steered our evolution through the ages. [big grin]. At least that's according to the comments section of discovery.com and the History Channel.

Nemesis is the brown/red dwarf that supposedly gets close every however million years and causes mass extinctions by disturbing the Oort cloud. Real ironclad evidence for that too /s.

lol... ouch, my brain cells

"Persephone" is one of the "science-fiction-conventional" names for a large planet discovered beyond Pluto; I believe Arthur C. Clarke was the first to use the name in this way, back in 1946. It is assumed by FD that the recently postulated Planet IX, once it is confirmed, will be given the name "Persephone".

Which is a shame, to an extent, as all the other "actual planets" in our solar system have Latin-based names, while Persephone is Greek-based. To keep the "Latin theme", they should have used the Latin version of the name: Proserpina. Of course, the IAU may veto both options, on account that both the names Persephone and Proserpina have already been given to asteroids, over a hundred years ago (asteroid numbers 399 and 26 respectively). The IAU tends to avoid giving two objects the same name if it can be avoided.

Le Verier did that in the late 1700's. It was found about 1 degree from where he said it would be. He later on tried to calculate the position of Vulcan, a supposed planet within the orbit of Mercury, who would be responsible for its open orbit. It was never found, Einstein later on explained why it had an open orbit.

It might be there, but if people were able to calculate a planet's position based on the orbital changes of another one 250 years ago... If countless of other dwarf planets have been visually confirmed AU's passed Pluto's orbit... If they discover planets light years from our own Sun, then I'm a little sceptic about the whole idea of overlooking a chunk of rock the size of Neptune.

So one is a myth, the other is one explanation of impact-related mass extinction (and not that solid evidence until the object has actually been properly observed and the orbit figured out). Together, they are speculation round evidence that is slowly gathering that the Solar System has a well, 9th planet in far orbit (Pluto is out, I forgot).

The new evidence for Planet 9 is based on orbital disturbances of the objects also introduced to Sol with 2.2. So we know it there and that it is large, at least. Whether it is a giant iceball or a gas giant remains to be seen. ED can show it as an ice ball until proven otherwise.

Actually , Einstein explained that Mercury acted the way it did due to it's elyptical orbit and pseudo- tidal lock to the sun, which previously La Verier tried to explain by inventing Vulcan, but it only existed in his mind as a manifestation of his own ego

Whilst I always like to see improvements on how planets are rendered its starting to annoy re basically nerfing great looking places. What have they done to Ariel? It used to look amazing, now it looks like someone took a sand blaster to it. Hmmm
