SOL system - visiting for the first time - mild let down...

I understand we cannot land the Earth, but why we cannot see the Moon? Or Pluto? Or Io?

Why is the Mars "Earth like" world? There's no way in million years that the planet would suddenly have oceans and continents. Even with advanced and extreme human interventions.

  • Make the Moon landable
  • Make Pluto landable
  • Make Io landable
  • Make Mars the way it really is, without ridiculous oceans and continents. AND landable.
I think this is quite big overlook, if anything humans/players are the most interested in our SOL system. At least to pay a visit and check the planets in the game if we cannot in real time. We have the most data of all the known space, ED should utilize it way more and be more scientifically accurate.

Alright, even if Mars has its own lore in the Elite universe... why we cannot land other non-atmospheric planets and moons?

I dunno, I suppose ED have their reasons, perhaps it's future proofing, maybe their gonna run a big campaign where the Thargoids bomb the dukes out of those planetoids and they only have the destroyed terrain built, then run a campaign to rebuild them... I dunno, I just made that up... but you never know!

Maybe it's just placeholder material for a new update, "Elite: Homeworld," which will be a super detailed Solar system campaign that is a game in and of itself. No one will want to leave Sol again!

...

Hey, I can dream... ;)

The moon is a fully developed body in the elite universe, domed cities, transport systems, underground farms etc, that's a huge task to develop in game, and if it is developed in game there's no way that the authorities would let just anybody land there, the speed with which our ships travel and the huge power stored in the power plants means any careles pilot could kill millions of people. it would need special permits and a good reason to get anywhere near the moon, mars or earth, let alone land there. I haev cracked up a few times landing so I certainly wouldn't let me anywhere near them if I was in charge!

There are some bodies with future development attached no doubt that are permit locked, and some bodies that simply aren't in the landable category for some reason or other even though they are airless, you see that all over the galaxy. The reason we can't land there is because FDEV either don't want us to for story reasons or the bodies in question aren't ready, either way it's FDEV's decision.

We might be able to land on them in the future, even the earth and mars, but I expect it's going to be strictly autopilot controlled landing from orbit for Earth, Mars and the Moon if it does happen, and only to a few locations because the probably aren't going top fully develop the massive cityscapes across the entire bodies, there will be selected areas we can access with views to distant areas that are unnaccesible, at least that's what I expect. For lightly developed ELW and WW it may be different and we may ba able to land anywhere.

The future is as yet uncertain, demanding the future now won't make it come any quicker.

It’s a good theory but I think it’s a little more basic than that.
FDev need to make them perfect replicas before they allow anyone to land on them else the forum would be flooded with complaints that a crater was in the wrong position, not the correct size, etc.

I would like you to go back 141 years of Recorded Audio. What they use to record Music. Everything to the phonograph, Records, 8 track, Tapes, CD, Digital MP3 and how much an sd card can hold today 1TB. Look at your computer and your cellphone tech. Don't you think Anything Possible?

Doesn't make sense that Mars is no Mars, it's fully changed with oceans, yet the moon is fully developed, but looks like our own "plain" moon.
I kind of wish they just left the way it is. We could at least "live view" and experience the planets of our solar system.

THEN, if they ever release a dlc with more details, cities, oceans, lore... then change it.

There are a lot of terraformed worlds in the bubble. Terraforming is an integral part of the Elite universe. If you don't think it's possible, feel free to go back in time and tell a young Braben that his game series shouldn't contain such scifi ideas.

Also, Pluto has an atmosphere. Quite a tenuous one, but still, more of an atmosphere than was believed possible for such a small body not so long ago.

I was thrilled when I arrived at SOL. The earth was great to look down on. Flying to saturn and venus were awesome. I was hoping that there would be an international space station in orbit around the earth and a few hundred satellites possibility a few astronauts who couldn't get back to shuttle in time etc.. A sense of being in 3305 with the remnants of our time to look at.
