Newcomer / Intro Solo, can i stop my enemies from running away (frame shift)

I am trying to make money in my eagle by killing wanted npc's (solo). On most occasions though They simply frame shift away before I can finish them. Is there a way I can stop them from frame shifting away? I purchased a torpedo launcher ( to use to finish them) but could not afford the 15k for the ammo. LOL so I sold a it again.

shoot either their engines, FSD drive, power plant or power distributor. you can target it using the sub targets panel on the left panel or there is a keybind to select it but i can't remember the default keys.

When you detect them building theme frame shift, get as close to them as you can to mass lock them. I often boost and throttle back to get within a couple hundred meters of them and mass lock them to prevent the jump.

I also throw everything I have at them to kill them before they escape.

I only target sub systems and disable the fsd if they are bigger than a Cobra.

I usually sub target anyone I'm KWSing. It takes a few seconds to finish the scan, so I jam the targ-sub-targ button till I land on the power supply sub unit (my favorite, it's either that or the FSD really)

This.

The closer you are to them the longer their frame shift drive will take to charge for jump. Use your pip management system to ensure you get those pips in ENG and go to full speed to chase and boost. Also the sharper your aim becomes the less time your opponent will have to jump.

Targeting susbsystems in smaller craft is a bit impractical, as in most cases you ll end up destroying the ship hull integrity before the subsystem anyways. As mentioned, I typically dont bother with subsystems unless the ship is of decent size, i.e. Lakon 6 and above.

Great responses thanks. I did not know sub systems could be targeted. I'm new so I'm mostly fighting smaller ships so I'll try and get closer. Thanks

OK. So I have tried getting real close, touching in fact and they still just frame shift out. I guess my guns just are not powerful enough to take em down fast enough.

Our your aim! ;)

Seriously though, if you have lasers the best way to fire at full power and in a sustained manner is to have 4 pips in WEP, otherwise your lasers overheat and you need to wait to cool them down for longer periods, and that makes you kill your target in more time... but in the other hand 4 pips in WEP prevents you from having those same pips in ENG to chase fast, so it really comes down to that balance and how well you manage those pips to be in the right place at the right time, all the while managing your speed appropriately.

Skill! :)

Getting closer to them makes their FSD to charge slower but it wont stop it. There will always be a fair share of NPC that will escape no matter how fast you are (maybe they activated the FSD very early on, who knows) but others wont. The better you get at a) managing your energy system pips, b) your speed and c) your aim then the more kills you ll get and the less they ll escape.

Also you need to maximize the time you shoot effectively at your target so to minimize your time to kill and the time he ll have to escape:

The better you get at maneuvering the more time you ll spend effectively shooting at your opponent, as opposed to longer "jousting" passes that minimize the time you have for shooting. Maneuvering well means trying to maximize the time you spend facing your opponent at weapon range while minimizing the time your opponent does that. "Jousting" passes (although a valid tactic especially for ships with the better weapons) are not the most effective way to achieve that. Learning how to get the most out of your ship turning rates within the "blue zone", use of boosters and assist off will help you with that.

Try using 1 laser and 2 multi cannons. If you get 5k I'm bounties, you will have paid for your ammo. I have been up to 200k in bounties in 1 trip. Laser melts the shield and multi cannon kills the hull.
