Solo Orthrus fun at spire sites.

Hi everyone,

* If you can clear the Banshees and other enemy on foot before starting Orthrus runs, do that first *
Use your ship to do missile runs to take out the weaker enemies and to do some damage to the Banshees. If you want to take out the Banshees in your ship with missiles, it works, it's just a pain. Much easier on foot. Use plasma weapons for Banshees. Run underneath the front portion of the Banshee and target the three half sphere objects. They go down with about 20 shots. Stay underneath the front portion at all times. Constantly move to say underneath.

If you're looking for something fun to do that can earn you quite a few credits, solo Orthrus farming at the spire sites is pretty engaging. This isn't a skill thing. It's fairly easy once you get the hang of the timing for the Shutdown Field Neutralizer. Of course there are times where the Banshee shutdown missiles can nail you. You can recover from these and still get the kill.

We were playing in Open and didn't see anyone for hours, so we gave the solo option a try. The AX PGs are the way to go for big groups and fast kills of course. The work the AX players have done on the AX Discord is pretty amazing. Plus all the detailed updates on systems, tissues, spires and everything else concerning Thargoids is extremely well done.

EDITED WITH NEW BUILD INFO
I used a Cutter with 3 pre-engineered missile racks and 3 pre-engineered AX Multis. You can get a kill with about 25 shots if you do it right and don't waste missiles, which translates to 7 kills per session. You can do almost 3 full runs. It takes 10 mins to get restocked at the FC, so you have 30 minutes to kill. At about 1 per 2 minutes, you can take down about 7. On average, I can clear 600 mil to 700 mil per hour. You'll make much more in a group with how quickly they go down with multiple commanders. This is more for fun and to try something different.

Some things I learned after a few failures.

1. Stay near the back of the tallest spire. You'll avoid quite a few Banshee shutdown missiles. This suggestion came from one of the YouTube videos I watched.
2. Wait for spawns in the sky near you, or from the back or two side portals as they are coming out of the spire.
3. Ignore the Banshee shutdown missiles. Make sure to get the Orthrus shutdown neutralized and you'll be fine. I only noticed one Orthrus shutdown attempt per kill.
4. Once in a while the Orthrus sends out the shutdown field instantly. Very tough to avoid. If that happens, let the Orthrus fly away, reset and try again.
5. If you have a friend, family member or another player that can join you're crew, you can get the extra pip. It's not needed, but every little bit helps to keep your neutralizer going longer. Plus they'll get about 75% of the bond or 30 mil per kill. Great for new players or those that don't have the credits/mats to make the build.
6. If you stay about 11km away, the shutdown missiles seem to stop. If you stay near the ground, most hit the spire structures before reaching you.
7. You can do this with a Chieftan just as easily. I'm sure other ships would work too. I wanted the 6th rack to make the kill quicker to decrease the chance of escape.
8. It's a power hog. Just shutdown your AFMU and Frameshift Drive once you get there and you should be set.

Nothing major and not hard to do once you get the hang of it.

Cool stuff, I tried that too some time ago in a Challenger with 3xcytoscramblers and 4xmissiles, but without anything to deal with Scouts I could only get up to 5 Orthruses per trip. I guess it averages about 200m per hour - which is still very decent money.
And yes, it is a nice breeze of fresh air to not have to deal with constant shutdown pulses all around, however one hit from a banshee missile and there is not enough time to finish the Orthrus before it jumps out.
It helps immensely to have a second person (or maybe alt account) to hold the instance. Then you can deal with Banshees, rearm and come back - they are vulnerable to ax missiles, but it takes a lot of ammo to kill all 8 of them.

I took your advice. Cleared all the Banshees and have a friend sitting there now. Wow, big difference. Way more fun.

The Banshees go down pretty quick with Plasma, specifically the Tormentor if you nail them in the 3 weak spots on their belly. Also, stay in the front of them for anyone taking down Banshees. When near their rear, they do this massive attack that kills you outright.

Oh, I am glad you are doing well :)
By massive attack you mean sticky bomb barrage? I do not recall them having a third type of attack...
Well, sticky bombs supposedly kill outright and cannot be avoided until they land - as they seem to turn while in the air. But I always managed to jump out of them after they landed.

Banshee didn't kill me (yet), but I died from nearby Revenants several times. With more than three I struggle to get out of crossfire and they are amazingly difficult to hit when alarmed. I tried killing them with karma assault rifle but any time they take a hit they "jump" several meters away. Rocket launcher or plasma sniper rifle kills them in one hit, but I only managed to hit them unalarmed. Nasty little beasts...
At least dying did not put me in a station far away, but in my ship 1000 km above spire site at no cost - so having someone holding instance helps, otherwise I have to start over with all Banshees present.

Some time ago one guy in open (sorry to him I don't remember nickname) showed me killing Banshees with ship - without disembarking. Today Grimscrub confirmed it on AXI discord.
Just fly low and aim ax missiles on ground under Banshee, then splash damage goes into its underbelly. Sometimes Banshee actually rises high (trying to attack you I guess) and I can fire straight into them from below. Takes 4-12 salvos to kill one for me but my aim is not that great.
Although, this is not really a safer way. If a sequence of shutdown missiles&fields hits me then my ship stays defenceless while Revenants&Banshees converge. They actually managed to kill me once this way. But this way is much faster if it goes well.

I am doing sampling now as per AXI&XSF request. If their efforts go well I might come back to spire site on weekend. If not, then I guess I will follow Aleks Zuno advice and bomb Titan.

Saw a Youtube video showing the remote flak cannon removing banshees quickly and easily while you're still in the air.

Haven't tried the method myself but it seems to be a positive.

And the flaks can be obtained from the med-ships now the A-X stuff is unlocked.

I'll give that a try. I think I have a couple extra ones from builds when we were fighting Interceptors and killing the swarm months ago.

If you have a link to that video, I'd love to see it. Did a quick search and couldn't find it.

Just a quick update. I'm getting about 15 to 17 kills per hour with the adjustment in the build. So you can net 600 million+ an hour solo at Spire sites. Just make sure the Banshees are all cleared out, ignore the Scouts and other Interceptors.

It's extremely fun doing it all solo. Back to Oya.

Sorry, here my aircraft carrier happened to be in the yellow zone and I decided to shoot Orpho at signal points 4.
I have 6 missiles, speed 500, but I never managed to kill Orpho, as soon as he has less than 50% (or less) he jumps away. What to do ?

Get more dakka 🔫.
Not sure which missiles have speed 500, but best are the Sirius pre-engineered AXMR.
Enhanced AXMR work too, if you add something to help break the shield. My Anaconda reliably kills with 4 EAXMR and 4 Cytoscramblers. (6 EAXMR + 2 Cytos might be faster, but I dislike the low total ammo of the class 2 EAXMR.)

Sirius missiles have more ammunition but are twice as slow.

Dear Askin, can you post a link to this video?
I tried to find this video but all I can find is on-foot takedowns.
I tried flak myself but wasted all its ammo and did not manage to kill a single banshee. Nor even any of revenants around. Flak bounces off the ground and I tried to bounce it under the banshee. From very close.
There is a chance my aim is simply too poor, but I suspect flak might not have enough damage.

To be honest - if flak can efficiently kill anything else than swarm, then I would rather try flak to kill the 60+ group of scouts that eventually circles around the spire (and decimates my framerate).
Also, for my understanding, missiles should be a bit easier on banshees as one can fire them while moving and avoiding shutdown missiles. With flak one has to focus to visually track where flak is going. Flak circle gets red due to revenants around.
The upside is that flak does not count towards experimental weapon limit, so for big ships it might be additional dakka.
