Newcomer / Intro Solo player mode ... ships not available for purchase

Cheers folks. New player who has only played in Solo mode thus far.

I noticed that a lot of ships, that are listed on the web site and talked about across the Internet, are not available in the Shipyard for me as a Solo player. Is this a bug? Or, are many ships only available during online play -- which would suck, imho?

Thank you in advance! :)

It's all based on where you are. Each shipyard is different. Some may carry 6, 8 , or 12. All depends on where you are.

Ah, I see. Nice to see that the game varies a bit based on location. Leads me to one more question that's nagging at me ...

Is there any way to go immediately to a very far-off system (ie: Sol) without literally jumping from one system to another -- I imagine that'd take months at my rate of play? I'm currently somewhere near the Brani & Chimba systems. Thank you again!

No, you'll always have to plot a route. The better your Frame Shift Drive gets, the longer the individual jumps can be, and with a Fuel Scoop, your range becomes virtually unlimited.

Lots to see and scan on the way, though, so don't worry. Civilized space is quite small compared to the rest of the galaxy, even if it seems vast at the beginning. My first trip over 120 LYs felt like a marathon, by now, it feels like a walk to the bakery. (Though a lot prettier and awe-inspiring.)

Okay ... thank you. At least now I don't feel like I'm missing out on some basic feature.

I don't mind the journey. :D

Is our placement in the universe, when first starting, completely random?

No, everyone starts in the same region. (I guess the Pilot's Federation Academy is there. :) )

If you were to do it all over again, in which direction would you fly then? I really don't know where I'm going - just flying missions where I find them.

I have Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted open in another browser tab ...

"In Elite Dangerous, you can simply warp into Mordor. No one will stop you. No one will warn you. And you will die."

I LOL'ed.

It's a great read -- ought to be linked to on the game's home page, imho. :)

As someone drawn to exploration, I'd always head for an independent high tech system at the edge of populated space. (The sphere of colored dots if you zoom out the galaxy map.) The drawback is that I usually have to travel a lot if I want to participate in Community Events, official or otherwise. Keep some distance from Lave and Sol, and you'll be basically be fine wherever you go.

Gotta go, kids are waking up. :) But thanks!

Thank you for your time, CMDR Kuroshio. :)
