Some concerns that I have

Ok, so I have waited for a game like this (excluding the older elite games...Sadly I never had the chance to play them) for quite some time. Now that it's here, I'm almost afraid that it's too good to be true. I simply don't want Elite Dangerous to fail. That's a big worry that I have. Does anyone else share these thoughts?

PS. I love the game, which is why I want it to succeed so desperately

Like pretty much all people on this forum, I want the game to succeed. Today was the first time I've played anything other than the combat scenarios. Ignoring the bugs, I think in the public beta we have finally gotten a good feel of the game. To me it feels much more brutal than I expected. More cold. I don't mean that in a negative way though. Space in this game feels somewhat realistic. So it should be cold and unforgiving and desolate.

Currently I feel like the game has a steep learning curve, you almost need to know what you're doing before you start playing. Plus there are a lot of keys. I have a 12 button joystick and still I have to use keyboard buttons too. That feels very old school. Most modern games do a lot of hand holding early on. This is beta of course, so we will have to see whether this comes later. I do feel they could stand to make the game somewhat more accessible in the early stages. For example a set of missions to complete that introduces you to the key aspects of the game.

Anyway, will the game succeed or fail? To me the game has a lot of potential. They more or less just need to add: the rest of the galaxy, more ships, missions and mining and I will be happy. I'd call that feature complete but there are probably other things planned too.

If they can wrestle the bugs out of the system then yes I think they will be on a winner. As long as it is profitable for Frontier and can sustain them sufficiently to bring some expansions I think we can deem it a success.

I mean, Elite has a pretty big fanbase, especially after all these years. People want a new elite game, people want space sims. I just keep telling myself "They made it to Beta, they can push on the rest of the way". Seems like most people are relatively happy with the game, anyway.

I think for newcomers its really worth doing the single player scenarios. Getting the control system just right and practising skills in there before heading into the big smoke, so to speak.

One positive is that the game is mostly intuitive to learn. Although one bug bear I have is the puny un gimbled laser we get to start with. If I find using that hard then I think lots of people will too.

When it comes to the game we are missing a huge amount of expected content including missions and so on but I do hope Frontier manage to put some humour and soft touches in too. Nothing wrong with a lil bit of quirky fun here and there.

I think everyone wants the game to be great and the team are delivering. It is still early days but DB has hinted the game development is going to continue for quite some time; they want to get it right. So lets hope they manage to pull it off :)
