Some DLC ideas, and a case against a popular request.

I see a lot of people asking for a petting zoo type of DLC. I am against this. Why? Because I think that using a DLC for a petting zoo would be frustrating. A petting zoo would introduce farm animals, but do we really want to invest zoo resources into caring for petting zoo animals? This game is about conservation and animal care. Petting zoo's stress animals out and are generally very small parts of a zoo. I wouldn't mind seeing a "Petting Zoo Facility" come to the game as part of a free update, and behaves as a rabbit hole facility where guests can get an entertainment/education value. But I do not want to have to invest in caring for farm animals, and spending CC's and cash to acquire them. There are far better DLC's that we could use.

Australia: The Outback
Australia: The Wetlands
South America: The Highlands
North America: Desert Southwest
North America: Big Game
Africa: Tropics
Africa: Coastal
Africa: Animals of the Savannah
Europe: Wilds of the Alps
Europe: Mediterranean
Asia: The North
Asia: Tropics
Critically Endangered Species
Planet Marine Expansion

No one would force you to add these hypothetical animals to your game. There are other animals I’d like to see before domestics but for building a realistic zoo in all aspects they’d be very useful. I’d also like to include some domestics in a small zoo.

Examples - not a comprehensive list - I would like to see include:

  • kunekune pig
  • highland cattle
  • alpaca
  • Soay sheep
  • Icelandic horse

I'm guessing you weren't a big fan of the llama then, since that is a petting zoo animal. I objected to it for similar reasons - I think it was a wasted slot when there were countless other South American animals that could have been included, but I can at least understand Frontier's reasoning for choosing it (llama are pretty iconic for South America).

As for DLC, I don't object to a Petting Zoo/Barnyard Pack in essence, because as markun says they are a fixture of many zoos, and the goal should always be to make the zoo realistic as possible, but I do agree it should not be a priority.

Every zoo I've ever been in has a petting zoo, so it would fit in nicely.
I want petting zoo animals, but it would be all right if they waited for a year before offering them, and offered us a few more wild animal DLCs first.

I didn't hate the llama choice. I would of rather seen Caiman or Puma but I think both will come at some point.

If petting zoos were added, I'd rather it be in the same way that exhibits are...with less care and not having to spend CCs to get.

Sorry, but that sounds awful. You can't have goats/pigs/donkeys in the game and give them exhibit-type animations. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting what you're saying, though.

My take away is that his biggest problem with it would be using conservation credits in order to purchase domestic livestock, which I can understand - they aren't exactly conservation-worthy given that we, in essence, created them for our own purposes.

Old and nowadays rare livestock breeds are a cultural heritage and well worth conservation. There is no reason not to have those special animals populate the petting zoo and hit two birds with one stone.

(Przewalski horses were mentioned before in this forum and seem to be highly desired. They are "merely" an old domestic breed as well that went feral thousands of years ago.)

I work with rare breeds (Enderby Island rabbit, Arapawa goat to name a couple) so I know what you mean, perhaps I should have phrased it better; rare breed conservation isn't usually the prerogative of a zoo. Typically it falls under the 'lifestyle farming' umbrella. Also, it isn't accurate to suggest that the Przewalski's horse was at one time a domestic breed. That is still an open question as far as evolutionary biology is concerned, with studies often contradicting each other. Przewalski's horse has more mitochondrial DNA in common with the ancient wild horse than it does the modern domestic horse (but some studies do show comparable sequencing between domestic horses and the Przewalski's horse, hence why there isn't any consensus or accepted answer).

In any event, you can hardly equate desiring the Przewalski's horse to desiring barnyard animals. The two are entirely separate. That said, rare breeds would probably be the way to go if Frontier desired to make a 'petting zoo DLC', because at least then we get the best of both worlds (a realistic addition to the zoo, with a conservation message behind it as well).

Then just don't buy them... No one is forcing you ;)

First of all, I'm not sure why you're telling me this. If you'd cared to read the thread, instead of jumping on one comment, you would see that I have no objection to a petting zoo DLC at all, I just think there are more important areas to cover first. If we get a petting zoo DLC at the end, great, it's something I want, a lot of zoos put in barnyards.

Second of all, that's a poor argument in and of itself, because any DLC they create is another DLC that they do not. Everyone should be aware by now that support for this game won't last forever. We will probably continue to get patch updates well past the point of DLC, as most games nowadays are supported in that regard, but eventually the DLC will stop, probably as soon as in three or so years (that seems to be the common timeframe for PC games). I am perfectly within my rights, as is everyone, to say "no, please don't make this" as you are to say, "yes, please make this". If they dropped a Petting Zoo DLC this year I'd be very disappointed. If they dropped it in 2022, or 2023 if we're lucky enough to still be getting new content that late, I'd be fine, because by then I would expect to already have my meerkats, African rhinos, sea lions, penguins, and whatever else.

Well, that is why i said thay people don't have to buy things (for cc) ;)

Okay, but I never said it was an issue, I simply assumed that was the issue for the poster I quoted. You seem to have targeted me with this even though I don't have any kind of issue with any of this at all.

I don't play Franchise Mode so the conservation credits are meaningless to me regardless.

Personnaly I would love a petting zoo DLC with non classical species. We can get goats and sheeps that are endangered, but still very domestic, instead of the white fluff sheep everyone knows ! We could get some specific and endangered horses or donkeys, I know there are race that are perfectly domestic, but they get mixed with other species and few people try to keep the race "pure" to preserve it.

I agree that it shouldn't be top priority, as much as I would love horses and goats, I would like penguins and meerkats first, but I would be quite sad if they never ever do this DLC ?

I would like a petting zoo addition if it was less a wormhole (like the bathroom) and instead you had different sized petting zoo options "small petting zoo" "medium petting zoo" "large petting zoo". Let's say there were 9 petting zoo species, 6 small and 3 large. The "small" petting zoo would hold 2 small and 1 large, "medium" would hold 4 small and 2 large, "large" would hold all 6 small and 3 large. Their areas would be set up the same way you set up exhibits. They would have some limited, looping animations, and that'd be it.

I wouldn't spend $10 on it but I'd enjoy it if it was included in another DLC or released in a free update.

So basically like ZT1?

A little more in depth since you'd still get to do the extent of setting up the areas like you do exhibits, and you'd still have to buy the animals and they'd still die eventually. It'd essentially just be a different kind of "exhibit" titled "petting zoo" with some looping animations.

I really don’t think that exhibit style would work for animals of the size you find in children’s zoos.

If we had those animals I’d want to place them in any enclosure I like and use them as proper animals. I’d also want design and building control. So I don’t think that idea is really consistent with how this game functions.
