some further thoughts on exploration & resource gathering

So, being fed-up with trying to play the bgs game with the current broken state of missions, I've headed-out into the black once again and am beginning to think that the present gameplay around resource gathering (nodes only dropping grade 1s, whilst bronzite cordite, metallic meteorites, etc function as they always have) is actually WAD and, further, I think I like it! o_O
I'm theorizing that the old nodes (piceous, frags, clusters, & needles) are now just place markers for where to find volcanic activity to progress one's codex entries and, as such, will just yield whatever element is predominant on the planet, whilst bits of space debris (meteors and such, especially around crater impact sites) will hold the more exotic elements. In the old system with say 2% yttrium, one could land at a geo site, find a horde of needle crystals, and pull copious amounts of the stuff... nice and "gamey", but hardly realistic; 2% of any element should be just that: you're only pulling 2 out of every 100 bits found.
Now, I'm no geologist, but the representation as it stands now in ED:O seems to me to be a much more faithful portrayal of the struggle to find resources in the wild than ED:H's gameplay. Yes, it's considerably harder to source one's jumponium: 'takes longer, you have to hunt quite a bit using the wave scanner, and the chance of coming-up empty handed is high... but, for me at least, it feels so much more like "exploration" than what ED:H gave us. And hey, if you want to be raking-in large amounts of any element then it seems to me that one should be doing mining for a career, not exploring! :p
This all of course may be totally off-base, and it surely would be good to have some insights from the devs about the mechanics at work here, but if it is actually WAD then I'll gladly eat humble pie for complaining about the new system!
Thanks for your patience with this wall of text and hope to hear your observations,
ym

I'm finding gathering mats alot easier in EDO than EDH (I was never a 'grinder')! Not just raws either (although I do like hunting for them on these new Planets!), but I think I've noticed Ships dropping more manufactured mats, too!

So far, surface mats gathering seems a lot more grindy than before. If it will take several hours to fill an empty mat store, I'm out.

RL Geology and in-game Geology should not necessarily be the same. I play to have fun and when it's too much grind the fun gets lost. Then I'll lose interest in the game.

I'm with you.

Saying that, it is possible the single mat drops are a bug. I mean, a crystal dropping Iron???

Travelled from one region of geological hotspots, over some mountains (you can just see them on the left in the picture above,) across an empty flat plain, to this outcropping of geologicals. They were not active at the time, and the mats on them would have been difficult to collect. Within ten minutes, they went from dormant to deadly (literally, those lava vents are over a 1000k - they will overcome your suit and overheat your SRV!)

I did knock some off with my personal weapon, and they confirm what you suspected - all Iron, no matter what form they come in. I did get some higher grade mats in the mountains from a metallic meteorite along the way.

indeed, unless they're not really supposed to be mat sources anymore but rather "markers" (as I suggested in the OP) for geo activity sites to progress codex entries...
'really dunno.
I too had voted for the "issue", but am not so sure anymore that it is actually an "issue" per se so much as just a "realism" change (albeit somewhat radical?) from how things worked in ED:H...???

getting mats as a planetary explorer in ED:H was ridiculously easy. Now you have to really work for it... or have the foresight to stock-up well before heading out into the black... or just do mining to get your mats... all of which doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me...

That would be the laziest reason they are there... that's not to say I don't appreciate them being there and it helps me see what I would have otherwise driven past.

Easier doesn't mean less tedious. Having to trade up is a terrible idea (which is what would have to be done gathering raw materials this way). Especially from all of them being grade 1.

Depends on the Planet you land on. If it's 22% Iron, roughly 22% of the mats you find will be Iron. Scan the Planet and look at the makeup of it before saying you can't find anything above G1.
The thing is is you can't. They are all dropping grade 1 materials right now. That 22% is actually 100% in Odyssey. Go find a geological site and see for yourself.

It's only the old nodes (piceous, frags, clusters, needles) that are dropping grade 1s. bronzite cordite, outcrops, and especially metallic meteorites (i just pulled a great haul of yttrium off one) work as normal.
i, for one, have been to multiple geo sites, but if you want the upper grade elements then it's craters where you now need to be looking...

I am now in a crater and only got iron (as well as all other nodes). All you did with me is reinforce that this is broken.

first off, i didn't "do" anything with you... how you choose to think & act is entirely on you. :)
but prosaically, are you using your srv's wave scanner to find meteorites (you can google what their specific wave profile looks like)...? they're what you want for the high grade elements (as stated multiple times now).
further, did you actually bother to read the OP? 'seems like yer kinda missn' the point here...
