Some mining questions

It's been a couple of years since I was last mining. I used to really enjoy the core mining and could make good profits from the time spent doing it.
There was even great BGS opportunities when certain states were stacked, pay-outs could go insane - the old western 'gold rush' comes to mind.

1. Is the pulse wave scanner working correctly now (Odyssey update #17)? Does it correctly show core asteroids and not just random ones
2. Does the BGS still stack states making for some great paydays if you can find such a system?
3. Does the hotspot name correctly indicate the mineral in the core motherload asteroids? Since Odyssey, couldn't find any of the named minerals in the cores.
4. Are hot spots and overlapping hotspots still producing better core yields?
5. Is core mining meta vs laser mining?
6. Is panite and void opals (laser mining) still the best value for time spent?

I would appreciate feedback on the above questions as it's been a while and things may have changed....

Not sure if it is fixed, but I haven't had any issues finding a deep core asteroid. Understand, it also shows subsurface rocks as well as the deep core ones.

2. Does the BGS still stack states making for some great paydays if you can find such a system?
Don't play the BGS...

3. Does the hotspot name correctly indicate the mineral in the core motherload asteroids? Since Odyssey, couldn't find any of the named minerals in the cores.
It never showed just the hotspot material, you have a higher likelihood of finding that. I have always run into other rocks than what I'm looking for, sometimes quite a few in a row. But usually I find what I'm looking for.

4. Are hot spots and overlapping hotspots still producing better core yields?
Not sure, some say you have to get out of the bubble to see this.

5. Is core mining meta vs laser mining?
I do both, but I play to enjoy, not because I'm trying to make X million a trip. For instance, I love to core mine in a Keelie, prospectors only, manually scooping the bits. It's fun and I make about $20 million in an hour. When I laser mine, sometimes I look for highest profit, other times I just play hoover and pickup everything that pays decent.

6. Is panite and void opals (laser mining) still the best value for time spent?
There are better paying things out there... INARA will point you in the right direction. Use the link below and sort by metals and minerals...
INARA commodities

Don't play the BGS...

I think everyone effectively "plays" the BGS, maybe not deliberately but its what drives prices of everything and your actions in doing missions or buying/selling affects it in turn.

Yes I believe there are states of systems which drive high prices, but not absurdly so. That tends to be the province of certain community goals where a requested commoditiy (Gold, Tritium) has a very inflated price.

If you are after maximum profit from laser mining, Platinum ~225k > Osmium ~175k >> Painite ~95k. Palladium, Gold and Silver not worthwhile imho.

For hotspots you need to be looking in the right kind of ring for the material. I'm pretty sure I've seen platinum hotspots which are not in Pristine Metallic rings, which have barely any platinum in them.

1, yes. mostly, just don't expect the core to match the hotspot.
2. BGS and mining don't really go hand in hand.
3. Hotspots are fairly broken. eg: I tried musgravite HS. Got 5 different cores and no Mus'.
This happens all the time to me.
4. Overlapping has no effect for me. other players may find a difference.
5. Core and laser can vary massively. eg: Enter hotspot yellow rocks all empty of core. At same time lasering can give big payout.
Added to that I can target a sub-surface Osmium or bromellite and get 22 ton from one rock. More than a core will give.
6. I don't bother shooting Painite rocks. Voids? don't know.

I have mined depleted rings somewhat successfully. I scan and might see several yellow rocks. 1 or 2 might pay out, and if they have a good sub-surface mineral or metal, I can make 50 to 60 ton in a few hours.

5. Is core mining meta vs laser mining?
Hard to say which is the Most Extremely Tedious Approach as tedium varies from person to person.
Laser is the the less exciting but unless you are being picky involves more frequent mining.
Core is more exciting while actually mining but even if you aren’t being picky the rocks to blow apart will be further apart.

Bottom line do the one you enjoy most, after all apart from trivial expenses like fuel and limpets you get 100% profit whatever you get.

Many thanks for the replies.
It seems that not everything is fixed.

From what I remember void opals could reach 1 million per ton when certain states stacked. I really like this and the excitement of finding stations was truly rewarding.

I haven't seen VO prices that high in a while. Seems like the old gold farm of void opals and LTDs is gone, via the hand of god.

For some reason I could never get core mining to work well. I have stuck with the old laser mining and I am able to make boat loads of mining Platinum for example. It is really weird how lopsided it is compared to stuff like transporting passengers. Frontier really need to work on making the time to money ratio better for some of the other professions.

yes pulse wave got better
2. Does the BGS still stack states making for some great paydays if you can find such a system?
afaik those states and their effect on vo still exist. however opals have kinda fallen from grace, so their current price even with the state buff might not be that fantastic... but i dont really mine for money so you would have to check...

hotspots up the chance of finding the thing in about 100km from the center of the spot, which means...
4. Are hot spots and overlapping hotspots still producing better core yields?
...most overlaps dont really work now (unless within the 100km range).
5. Is core mining meta vs laser mining?
id say those two got pretty balanced...
6. Is panite and void opals (laser mining) still the best value for time spent?
i think the current trend is lasering monazite
it's been a while and things may have changed....
welcome back to the galaxy commander o7 :)

Thankyou for these replies. It gives me some encouragement to start mining again.

Because Cores are shared for all players. If I told you mine (not that I have one) you'd get it and I wouldn't. I do believe they are shared by some mining groups but that's not commonly available for anyone that doesn't know the secret handshake.

Aaaaaa, so laser mining is individual for everyone, but an asteroid under core mining common to everyone, even for open and solo?

Cores are persistent for a while. I forgot for how long, but if I blow up a core, you will find only dust, but no core asteroid anymore if you visit it immediatly after me.

Yea it works. But it highlights others too, but the deep cores are brilliantly lit. Ie brighter.
2. Does the BGS still stack states making for some great paydays if you can find such a system?
Dunno l deep core mine out in the black.
3. Does the hotspot name correctly indicate the mineral in the core motherload asteroids? Since Odyssey, couldn't find any of the named minerals in the cores.
Yes as a rule. You will find others but predominantly yes the correct ones.
4. Are hot spots and overlapping hotspots still producing better core yields?
Deep core yields are unaffected by doubles etc. Only affect is more chances of finding deep cores.
5. Is core mining meta vs laser mining?
Laser mining platinum is the meta
6. Is panite and void opals (laser mining) still the best value for time spent?
No as above

They are part of the galaxy like stars, planets and FCs so are the same for everyone even if you play in open.

And what how much do they renew?
I think I heard it was two weeks but I could be wrong, it is certainly more than a day and I think it is less than a month. But as I have included a figure an expert will show up with the right one.
