Newcomer / Intro Some Newbie questions

Hi guys!

I'm playing now since around a week and really like this game. Nevertheless I've got some questions that I couldn't answer myself yet, so I wanted to ask you here:
  • Ranks: Currently I'm about to build up ranks at the federation. In the Status-screen I see I have no rank yet, but the bar is at 100% since some time now... When and how will I be awarded with my first rank?
  • Buy/Sell ships: What happens when I exchange an equipped ship against a much cheaper other ship? Will I get the difference back in Credits or will I just pay nothing for the new ship and the difference is gone?
  • DSS: I scanned several planets with a Detailled surface scanner but none of yet showed up any POI's on its surface, so there was nothing worth landing/visiting. Is this rather rare to find POI's on planets or did I miss something?
  • Bounty Hunting: Sometimes I get into longer fights with pirates, waste a lot of ammonition and right before I finally got them they warp away... I know there are FSD interdictors to pull targets out of Supercruise, but is there any possibility in general to avoid that they charge their FSD at all?

I'll appreciate your answers and thanks in advance :)

You need to do a rank-up mission. You will get them from federal factions and they will mention the federal navy in the title.

Don’t worry, any progress into the next rank will still be there after the rank up so anything you have done beyond 100% still counts.

With ranks it will make a small fuss about offering you a follow up mission, you will see the difference. If memory serves me right, you get a message in your inbox about it. You do the mission, you get the rank.

You can trade the ships, you get the difference back if you go for a lower priced one.

You should FSS the system first, it will tell you if there are some POI's to find on what planets, then you DSS the planet and it gives you the locations. Lots of planets have nothing.

You need a better armed ship, often, when you're not armed enough, you will get them down to nothing, they warp out and return maxed up again, though I read somewhere that this might have changed, none the less, you're not armed or skilled enough (no offence meant) to kill them outright. Maybe wait until you have better weapons. What ship are flying right now with what weapons? I wouldn't waste money on and FSD interdictor when that money could be better spent on better weapons.

Hello and welcome btw :)

There's some wep experimental that allows interruption of fsd least I think there is. Failing that .. once you've targeted a ship you've an option to scroll through various modules components weps etc installed on the ship. Single out fsd and reduce it to zero. He ain't going anywhere. But some ships have easier targets that achieve same outcome.. alliance chieftains and sister ships have exposed engines .. reduce that to zero you cripple said ship. Personally I always target either distributor or powerplant. Cripple either of these and you get a sitting duck.
However some ships have module reinforcements and or designed having those vulnerable components buried deep within the hull making em hard to destroy.

Ranks: As Orodruin said, Federal Factions will offer you missions that mention Federal Navy in their name and they also have the 3-links chain-like symbol like a follow up mission
Most of the time you also need to be Cordial/Friendly with them to qualify. You can also accumulate progress, your reputation gains are not lost - so you can chain several Rank missions one after another if your accumulated progress allows for that.

Buy/Sell Ships: there is a 15% (at least i think it is 15%) penalty when selling Ships, but it applies only to hulls. You can buy/sell modules with no penalty

DSS: Landable planets will show a blue crest around them in System Map. If the crest has some protrusions, it means there are settlements too. Also, you need to scan the planet 100% to have it reveal all its secrets (Bio/Geo/Human/Guardian POIs). Planets with features are rare, but not that rare.
Edit: as @XloubellXX pointed out, FSS-ing the system will reveal if a body has POIs, then you can travel to that planet and DSS it to 100% to actually reveal those POIs

Bounty Hunting: you need to be able to dish more damage, faster. Also you can try to target their subsystems.
IF you kill their FSD (0 integrity) they will not jump away. Also after you get their PowerPlant to 0 integrity, any shots that hits the PP will have a significant chance to trigger a chainreaction that will blow up their ships, no matter how much hull they have left.

You will need a rank-up mission. Rank points you collect in the meantime aren't lost, however - they just don't show up. Rank-up missions will have the word "Navy" in the title. They're usually follow-up missions (I haven't seen any other), at the top of the mission board with the cahin symbol in front of them. Usually, you'll need to be friendly or allied with the issuing minor faction, too. Oh, and if you don't like the mission type, don't accept it. Another one will be along soon.

Buy/Sell ships
: What happens when I exchange an equipped ship against a much cheaper other ship? Will I get the difference back in Credits or will I just pay nothing for the new ship and the difference is gone?
You will get back IIRC 80% of what you paid for ship and modules if you sell them together. If you sell (or store) the modules first, you'll get back 100% on the modules. If that payback exceeds the price of the new ship, then you get the amount credited to your account.

: I scanned several planets with a Detailled surface scanner but none of yet showed up any POI's on its surface, so there was nothing worth landing/visiting. Is this rather rare to find POI's on planets or did I miss something?
Yes and no. The POIs you see from the FSS/DSS are persistent - and yes, they are rare. Those would be geological sites (volcanism), biological sites or permanent installations. Other, non-persistent POIs will show up on your radar while you fly between 2 and ~10 km above the surface - some wrecks, crashed beacons, non-persistent installetions - while within inhabited space.

Bounty Hunting
: Sometimes I get into longer fights with pirates, waste a lot of ammonition and right before I finally got them they warp away... I know there are FSD interdictors to pull targets out of Supercruise, but is there any possibility in general to avoid that they charge their FSD at all?
Sure. There are two types of FSD resetting missiles (engineered or PowerPlay), you can disable their thrusters or FSD by sub-targetting - or you can simply kill them fast enough. Some big long-range weaponry helps, although the good PvP players (not me) tend to use railguns for that.

Just to correct the inaccurate information in the posts above:

You receive 90% of the value of your ship+fitted modules on selling.

So it is 10% of what you paid for it that you lose.

What if you bought it from Shinrarta Dezhra? I think you get 10% off so does that mean you get your money back?

No. The payback is always calculated on the actual price you paid. There is also another system that affoers everything, no access restrictions (like ShinDez), but higher prices. You can't make money by buying ships low at ShinDez and sellung high there  .

I think you might have missed the fact that I deliberately underlined OF WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT - so my fault for not using upper-case, bold, size 36 pt and flashing red text I suppose. ;)

Always store or sell modules before selling a ship, for the core modules you cannot just remove replace with the smallest E rated module available if there isn’t one available for sale then store the module and you will get an E rated one the size of the slot automatically and can sell the original from the stored modules screen.

Disposing of engineered modules is usually considered a waste.
