Some questions about Elite

Hi,

I am rather new here.. the game look amazing so i was considering probably getting into it. I have few questions about the game. So from what i have heard so far this seem to be an unique space sandbox experience.. looking at the videos it look gorgeous!

1- Are you only going to be able to fly small dogfighting ships or you will be able to fly bigger ship such cruiser or battleship ? or this is plain dogfighting ?
2- Is combat more like real space sim or more an arcade oriented space sim or both aspect considered ?
3- Are damage gonna be modulated ? Like can you take down nav or weapons on a bigger ship ?
4- Are multiplayer are one big server or several small servers ?
5- Can we expect activities such mining ? trading ? for gaining CR.

Thanks!

Answer - Yes you will be able to fly bigger ships
2- Is combat more like real space sim or more an arcade oriented space sim or both aspect considered ?
Answer - With flight assist off its more like a space sim - Its not full Newtonian though so some physics is sacrificed for gameplay
3- Are damage gonna be modulated ? Like can you take down nav or weapons on a bigger ship ?
Yes
4- Are multiplayer are one big server or several small servers ?
Background galaxy on a single server. Players are in an instance of up to 32 players on a peer to peer network with one party acting as host.
5- Can we expect activities such mining ? trading ? for gaining CR.
Definitely these are major aspects of the game.

Have a look at the DDF archive for a fuller answer.

1) there are a range of sized ships you can fly, but you won't be allowed all the ones you see out there. Capital ships are off the list.

2) Oh, a can of worms. Some will say "arcade" some will say "newtonian with restrictions" so I'd say somewhere inbetween, both aspects considered. There is a flight-assist off mode which puts you in control fully, but there is still a speed limit. So you can't just keep accelerating until you reach ludicrous speed.

3) Yes. It already works like that. What's more the damage model should allow fo panels to fly off and have ships spill cargo before destruction. There's a video on that (I think it's called Cobra Teaser)

4) It's Peer to Peer, so a server finds you a fellow to play with, and one of you hosts. In any instance there can be up to 32 players.

5) Yes, yes. Also bounty hunting, piracy, missions, and others. Do what you like.

Welcome by the way!

1 - most definitely you'll be flying bigger ships as well as smaller ones if you want.

2 - hmmmm :)

3 - Yep you can take out sub systems on any ship small or large.

4 - Better folk than I can answer this properly

5 - All that in the game first release and much much more planned for later

Welcome to the forums.
Short answers:
1-many type of ships (up to 25 on launch) will be available. Game encompass fighting, exploring, trading and more.
2- Combat itself is somewhat gamy. Ship movements is realistic (but with some limits placed for gameplay purposes - i.e. top speed)
3- Yes - It''s actually already in the Alpha, however not fully fleshed yet.
4- The Universe is on 1 server. Players have instanced 'islands' where up to 32 can intersect and combine at one time. (think of a player as having a bubble around him than can intersect and include / be included in other player bubbles is they happen to be in the same location. The maximum number is dependant on network and user machines performance.
5- yes yes and more goodness.

Very good intro and much more detailed answers on what to expect at the DDF archive, sticky subjects:

ok I'll have a go :) greetings commander

Have a little browse of these faq

1- Are you only going to be able to fly small dogfighting ships or you will be able to fly bigger ship such cruiser or battleship ? or this is plain dogfighting ?

Larger ships are coming, the Anaconda is already in the game but not yet flyable (apart from by one guy that managed to get his early!) and that has a bridge and gun decks. There are much larger frigates such as the huge panther clipper. The larger ships will need crew, but you can fit turrets which you will need to man strategically since they can't dog fight. David Braben has also hinted at a ship that carries a dog fighter similar to the Sidewinder that carries no hyperdrive. There will be 25 ships available for the first release but Frontier have already hinted at future expansions with new ships.

2- Is combat more like real space sim or more an arcade oriented space sim or both aspect considered ?

Frontier Elite 2 wrote the book on space sim combat way back in 1993. However because Elite Dangerous is multiplayer there is a speed limit. The game currently has a flight assist which can be bound to a button and used to put your ship in the hands of newton but you'll need to practice.

3- Are damage gonna be modulated ? Like can you take down nav or weapons on a bigger ship ?

Yes today! Already in the alpha you can target sub systems. You can take out a ships drive or target specific weapons.

4- Are multiplayer are one big server or several small servers ?

So there is a P2P system in place for the instances but there are servers in place which hold the universe and manage the general running of the game, someone else might be able to go into more detail.

5- Can we expect activities such mining ? trading ? for gaining CR.

Oh yes, again this is the original space trading game from 1984. We're getting trading in the next update to the Alpha - its a massively important part of the game. You can also pick up a mining laser which are visible in the Alpha already. We've seen planetary mining in the previous games so who knows how far Frontier will go this time!

Holy.. %$?&% look incredible, tons of informations and godness.

First of all, thanks for all the infos about the game i will have a nice reading time :) Sad i didn't heard of Elite in the past. I used to be a big fan of Star Citizen until now (i am still one but i normally like to discover alternatives) but i didn't know there was a competitor. Furthermore, Elite seem to have a very polished Alpha and i am really loving what i am seeing in the videos.

I was looking for a fun space sim game, integrated multiplayer & single-player, open world with emphasis on realism and immersion with cool ships you can buy, fly and customize ;-). This look like the thing! Hopefully this will get bigger and better.
