Some questions from a noob in PC / VR ;)

Hey CMDRs !

been playind ED for over 10 months now on PS4 . Love the game and planning to play for a while but I'm seriously thinking about switching to PC to experience VR, better graphics, have more tools to play the game & access to better HOTAS because PS4 version is very limited.

I left the PC world around 15 years ago and been playing only on PS2, PS3 & PS4 since so I'm completely lost on PC build and VR.

I actually have this PC:

Intel Core i7–6700 4 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 (2 Go DDR3)
8 Go DDR4

Would it run ED smoothly in VR ?

I'm planning to buy a Rift, looks like it would be a good choice from what I read. I heard that VR is limited in graphic quality / resolution. Is that right ?

Feel free if you have any suggestions :)

Thanks for you time !

For VR I would up to 16GB ram and preferably a 2070.
A 970 would really really struggle in VR.
CPU should be fine.

I use a rift with a 970.

It's ok but not crisp, crystal clear, but I'm never sure if it is because of my rig or because I haven't configured everything correctly.

Thanks guy ! I'll look to upgrade the graphic card and wait for extra RAM if needed after...I prefer to spend on a better card than RAM.

Dont buy a rift. It have poor resolution.

Better get some WMR headset.
Cheap option: Acer VR, Lenovo Explorer
Best option: Samsung Odyssey+

About GPU - as guys told You - 970 is a entry.

The Rift is a safe choice if you're planning to use it for a variety of games. It's a good headset with strong software support (and you get the very excellent Oculus-exclusive Robo Recall bundled with it, which is reason enough to buy the Rift on its own, imho). But if you're only going to play ED then the Samsung Odyssey+ is superior, as it has higher resolution screens. It can be hard to get hold of, though.

As for your PC, it's going to need a serious upgrade. The 6700 is a strong CPU, but 8GB is borderline and that GT730 is worthless junk. I've tested ED on the Rift with a wide range of graphics cards and they really fall into three categories.

Baseline to get the game running in VR without major issues is a GTX1060 or Radeon 570/580 if you're buying new, or a GTX 970, 980 or Radeon 290/290X/480 if you're looking for a used card. These will run the game acceptably provided you keep the detail settings down low.

A GeForce 1070, 1070Ti, 2060, or Radeon Vega 56/64 is a much better choice, though. Those cards will give a bit of headroom for turning up the detail and setting HMD scaling above 1.00 (this renders the image at higher resolution and then scales it down for the headset, which makes the image sharper - something the Rift benefits from quite a bit).

The ideal card, though, would be a GeForce 1080Ti, RTX 2080 or 2080Ti (and presumably the upcoming Radeon VII). But those all cost silly money.

I mostly play ED on the Rift with an i7-4790K with 16GB and a GTX1070, and it runs reasonably well. But the 1070 is limiting enough that I'm probably going to have to lock my credit card away when the Radeon VII launches.
